Watford 2-1 Millwall

Man, I suck.

Shortly after the Millwall match, the "From the Rookery End" podcast - podcast! - gets posted and here I am two days after the fact, getting the Millwall post out. I got busy at work after the match and it just skipped my mind until this morning. Apologies.

Watford made but one change going into this match, but it was a major one. Rene Gilmartin started between the posts in his first non-cup match in I can't remember how long. And he performed.

The match, dominated by the Hornets, stayed scoreless until the hour mark. We've all been waiting for the next Lloyd Doyley goal and it looked like he may have scored one in minute 68 - an own goal - but it was forgivingly granted to Liam Feeney to put the Lions up a goal.

Crunch time then for Watford as they faced another home loss, another momentary lapse of defense costing three points, another round of 'what-if?'

It was Carl Dickinson that scored the equalizer in the 78th minute to breath life back into the squad and Craig Forsyth from six yards out with five minutes left in regulation time to catch the rebound after a corner kick and hammer home the winner.

It's unlikely Watford will get as many chances to recover from their errors Saturday as they travel to St. Mary's Stadium to oppose league-leaders Southampton. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Watford 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Despite being the dominant team for most of the match, Watford, in a reversal of the Birmingham game, let Forest capitalize on an error and steal at least a point.

The match, scoreless but controlled by the Hornets, took a turn for the worse at the hour mark when Ishmael Miller jumped all over a mix-up in defense between Carl Dickenson and Scott Loach to net the match's only goal.

The loss pushes Watford back down the table to just one point above the drop zone. Fortunately, the Hornets face another weak sister in Millwall at Vicarage Road this Tuesday, September 27 at 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Barnsley 1-1 Watford 1-4-2 7 pts

Possession: Barnsley.

Shots: Barnsley.

Corners: Barnsley.

But it was Marvin Sordell finding a Mark Yeates header in the 37th minute and plunking it in from six yards out that put Watford ahead in the match and looked like the winning goal.

Barnsley evened up the match, however, when Andy Gray headed one past Scott Loach and there the score lay, earning each side a single point and a comfy spot mid-table for another week.

The next match is this Saturday, September 24 against Nottingham Forest at Vicarage Road. A late start, the match kicks off 11:15 am St. Louis time.

Reading 0-2 Watford 1-3-2 6 pts.

Football is back!

After a much needed international break, Watford roared back against Reading this weekend, capturing their first win of the season.

Newbie Mark Yeates had a hand (or foot as it were) in both goals, lobbing a free kick over the wall from 25 yards out for the first goal twelve minutes in and feeding the assist to John Eustace for the second goal six minutes into the second half.

Later in the day, Fanninho & I took in the SLU match against defending NCAA champs, the Akron Zips*. SLU, off a double overtime win against Notre Dame, went down 0-4 against a much stronger team, but played with more organization and discipline than I had seen yet this season, falling to set pieces and an inability to adapt against Akron's wing play.

That match was proceeded by a Guinness World Record attempt at the most people dribbling at once (have not heard how that turned out) as well as remembrance activities for 9/11 both pre-match and at the half, including honoring one of the survivors of the WTC attack.

The Watford win lifted them out of the relegation zone into sixteenth place.

I had not paid too much attention to the top of the table and was surprised to see Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton, the 1st & 2nd place finishers in League One last year holding down those two spots in the Championship. A repeat of those standing would have paid long odds at the start of the season.

Watford's next match is next Saturday, September 17 at Barnsley. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

* Zips is short for Zippers, after the popular rubber overshoes manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich company (HQ'ed in Akron at the time) in the 1920's & 30's. The mascot is Zippy the Kangaroo, one of the few female mascots in college sports in the U.S.
