QPR (nil-nil) 7-6-13 27 pts.

I missed this one too. Schedules are rough around the Holidays.

By all accounts, a good showing for the Hornets away, especially the beleaguered defense.

Next match is Saturday, January 3rd, an FA Cup tie at Vicarage Road against Scunthorpe. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Friday, December 26, 2008

Bristol City (2-4) 7-5-13 26 pts.

An early start and an early goal on Boxing Day by Nicky Maynard put Bristol City ahead and they never looked back.

Just 23 seconds into the match Maynard found the back of the net from 12 yards out on an assist by Michael McIncloe. 28 minutes later it was Ivan Sproule with the assist as Maynard got his second goal.

The Robins continued to dominate the first half but the score was held to 0-2 at Vicarage Road.

A glimmer of hope shone for the Hornets when Grzegorz Rasiak, back in the line-up today, drew Watford within one at the 48 minute mark with a right-footer from 12 yards, but Marvin Elliott took the lead back to two on a poor play by keeper Scott Loach three minute later. Elliott got an unwanted second goal as a Tommy Smith shot went off his head into his own goal making the score 2-3.

Watford played for the drawing goal but were outclassed. Lee Johnston found the net in added time for the Robins' fourth goal and Bristol City walked away with three points in the standings leaving Watford only five points clear of the relegation zone.

The Hornets travel to Loftus Road Sunday, December 28 to face QPR on just two day's rest. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Monday, December 22, 2008

Derby County (0-1) 7-5-12 26 pts.

As often happens this time of year, I was travelling to visit the family Saturday as the Hornets took their game to Derby County. I've attached the BBC account above.

Next match is Boxing Day at Vicarage Road, Watford hosting Bristol City with an ungodly 6:00 am kickoff St. Louis time.

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Coventry City (2-1) 7-5-11 26 pts.

Two home wins in a row have propelled Watford eight points clear of the relegation zone and provides a bright counter-point to the off-pitch turmoil surrounding the club.

Friday, CEO Mark Ashton resigned, replaced by Julian Winter and completing the turnover in Manager, Chairman, and CEO since the start of the season.

Today, Vicarage Road nearly defeated both squads as pouring rain left the pitch a sodden mess and an inspection was called just before the kickoff. The game proceeded and it became clear early on that tactical elegance & passing precision were not to be the order of the day.

Despite the error-prone circumstances, the match remained scoreless for a hour until Elliot Ward's tackle on Tamas Priskin lead to a Tommy Smith penalty shot. Smith sent keeper Keiren Westwood in the wrong direction and put the Hornets up 1-0.

The lead only lasted five minutes until the Sky Blues' Clinton Morrison found his way inside and equalized from six yards out.

Five minutes later and Watford was back on top for good as John-Joe O'Toole right-footed a shot into the bottom left of the goal from six yards out.

The next match is Saturday, December 20 at Derby County. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Norwich City (2-1) 6-5-11 23 Pts.

Brendan Rogers notched his first victory with the Hornets today as Watford fought off a push by Norwich City to clear three points in the standings for the first time since November 22.

Tamas Priskin found the assist from newcomer Liam Bridcutt to score from twelve yards out in the fifteenth minute to put Watford ahead at Vicarage Road. Little action until minute 52 when Lee Williamson, having missed Saturday's match at Birmingham City on suspension, was booked for unsporting behavior. The rough-and-tumble continued with Gary Doherty shown the yellow for Norwich six minutes later. The intimidation paid off though as Lee Croft managed to head in the equalizer at the one hour mark.

Tommy Smith saved the day for Watford a few minutes later, right-footing a goal in from 12 yards out to move the Hornets up the table.

The next opportunity for points is Saturday, December 13 at home against Coventry City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Rogers Bucks Rumors of His Imminent Departure

Triggered by the departure last week of Chairman Graham Simpson and the fact that he is working without a signed contract, daily newspapers reported Saturday that Brendan Rogers was looking to leave after only a handful of matches.

In the press conference after the Hornets' 3-2 loss to Birmingham City Saturday, Rogers denied the rumor and stated he will be signing later this week.

Another report from News of the World, believable given the club's financial situation but upsetting if true, is that Tommy Smith will be shopped. A fan favourite and engine of Watford's rare successful outings this years, Smith has only 18 months remaining on his contract and would be likely to bring £1 million in January's transfer market.

Birmingham City (2-3) 5-5-11 20 pts.

A game that could have gone either way ended in controvesy as full time was blown with a potential penalty kick outstanding.

Things started off well for the Hornets at St. Andrew's Ground when Tamas Priskin found the back of the net from six yards out in the 6th minute, but the lead lasted only a minute. Former Hornet Kevin Phillips headed a cross from Nicky Hunt to equalize and ten minutes later Marcus Bent left-footed a 25-yarder into the lower right corner of the goal to put the Blues ahead for the next hour.

Cameron Jerome put what looked like the final nail in Watford's coffin in minute 84, but Ross Jenkins right-footed a shot in from six yards to close the gap to one once again.

A final attack from the Hornets' Tommy Smith resulted in a handball and what should have been a penalty kick for the draw, but referee S. Mathieson blew full time and the Hornets went home empty-handed.

The next match is Wednesday, December 10th at Vicarage Road against Norwich City. Kickoff is 1:45 St. Louis time.

FC: Tottenham Hotspur (1-2)

Despite taking the lead off Tamas Priskin's left foot thirteen minutes into the first half, Watford's quest for the Cup came to a halt on this cold, rainy evening at Vicarage Road.

Mr. Mojo joined me at Barrister's for this rare opportunity to watch the Hornet's on TV. Adding to the flavor were three St. Louis Spurs fans.

A Tommy Smith pass set Priskin up to turn and beat his defender to slide the shot between Huerelho Gomes & the post. The Spurs retaliated by pounding the Watford end, missing a number of chances until a foul by Ross Jenkins on Jermain Jenas gave Roman Pavlyuchenko a penalty shot late in the first half that he converted to equalize.

Sloppy footing and lackluster play on both sides characterized the second half, a half marred by a groin pull for Jay DeMerit. Lloyd Doyley replaced the Captain. Both squads plugged along until Darren Bent squirted a shot between the near post and Scott Loach to nail down the victory for Tottenham.

Back to League action on Saturday as Brendan Rogers continues to seek his first win as head coach - this time at Birmingham. Kickoff is 9:00 St. Louis time . . . no TV.

LC: Game Day Tottenham Hotspur - Match on Setanta

A rare US televised match for the Hornets since falling out of the Premiership. I plan on a late lunch at Barristers to catch the first half. Kick off is 1:45 St. Louis time.

Doncaster Rovers (1-1) 5-5-10 20 pts.

Watford hosted cellar dwellers Doncaster Saturday in Brendan Roger's debut with the club -- managing a 1-1 draw.

I was on the road and missed the action, but newly loaned midfielder Liam Bridcutt, a nineteen-year old from Chelsea, made his debut for the club. No goals but he did pick up his first yellow with the club.

In other news, the Hornets drew Scunthorpe United in the Third Round proper of the FA Cup. The match will be at Vicarage Road January 3 or 4.

The next match is the quarter-finals of the League Cup, this Wednesday, December 3rd, at home against Tottenham Hotspur. Kick-off is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Bristol City (1-1) 5-4-10 19 pts

Thank God for Tommy Smith.

A scoreless match until 71st minute with Watford out-shooting the Robins, stricker Nicky Maynard picked up a pass from Stern John and right-footed in from six yards out. In atypical fashion however, Tommy Smith let fly from 25 yards out a minute later to tie up the match and salvage a point for Malky Mackay's last match before Brendan Rogers takes over.

THAT match will be this Saturday (one I'll have to miss) at home against Dorcaster. Kickoff is 9:00 St. Louis time.

Our anemic point-a-game pace leaves us only 3 points from relegation territory.

Rogers Named Gaffer

Brendan "Buck" Rogers was named to replace Aidy Boothroyd as manager today. Joining him will be Frank Lampard, young Frankie's dad. Malky Mackay will be staying on and will be managing Tuesday's match at Bristol City. Leaving the coaching staff will be Martin Hunter.

Rogers's managerial career began at Reading as the Youth Coach, a position he moved to at Chelsea in 2004. In 2006, he became skipper of Chelsea's reserve squad, the position he left to join the Hornets. Rogers is 35, the second manager in a row in his mid-30's to initiate his managerial career at Watford.

Reaction seems to be guarded approval that this was a good choice given the budget and the available talent.

QPR (3-0) 5-3-10 18 pts.

With Scott Loach in at goal and Jon Harley back from his three-game suspension, the Hornets nabbed the first League win for Malky McKay today.

Not a pretty game, QPR brought a tentative game to Vicarage Road under the direction of Paul Sousa for the first time. It was a quiet back-and-forth with a few corners here & there until the 25th minute when Damien Stewart ran up Jon Harley's back, setting up a penalty kick for Tommy Smith.

Smith sent keeper Radek Cerny sprawling in the wrong direction and netted his eighth goal of the season. Darren Ward, in for Leigh Bromby this match, made it 2-0 seven minutes later, catching a cross from Jon Harley and right-footing the ball in from 12 yards out.

Lee Williamson headed in the last goal of the day off a cross from Smith in added time to close the first half.

A frustrated QPR picked up two yellows and played a man down for the last nine minutes after Fitz Hall was sent off for violent conduct. Harley started collecting yellows for his next suspension when he took down Mikele Leigertwood to prevent a goal in the first half.

The win lifts Watford out of relegation territory; just two points above Charlton who sacked Alan Pardew today after an eight-game winless streak. The Hornets travel to Bristol City Tuesday, November 25. Kick off is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Soccer in St.Louis - Two Perspectives

On a day that saw St. Louis lose its former baseball patron, two random bits of data point to good news for soccer in the Gateway City.

First - Albert Pujols will be joining the Jeff Cooper-spearheaded team in bringing an MLS franchise to St. Louis in 2011. St. Louis is up against Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Portland, Atlanta, & Miami. There are two slots available.

Second - We were at a bar trivia night at Stella Blues last night (not a soccer bar) and were asked to name the football team featured in the film Green Street Hooligans. Though only one team (out of a dozen) got the correct answer (West Ham United), all the teams could name a football club and they weren't all Manchester United. A good sign indeed.

Round Five Tie Set for Wednesday, December 3

Kickoff will be 1:45 St. Louis time as the Hornets host the Spurs in quarter-final action of the League Cup.

Tottenham, one point from the bottom of the Premier League table have nonetheless been on a tear since late October, dropping only one match, that to Fulham last Saturday.

Watford, also languishing in relegation-land, has not fared so well - having gone six league matches without a win. The sole bright spot: the win over Swansea City in Round 4.

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Barnsley (1-2) 4-3-10 15 pts.

Another poor defensive display let in two goals in as many minutes, topping a solitary Watford goal from Tommy Smith (asst. McAnuff) and the Hornets find themselves three points off the bottom of the table. Nearly an own goal, Smith's score in minute 52 stood up for seventeen minutes until sub Miguel Mostto took advantage of confusion in Watford's backfield to even up the match.

90 seconds later, Stephen Foster put the Tykes ahead for good at Oakwell with a right-footer from 6 yards out.

Each side had another serious scoring chance, but saves from Richard Lee & Heinz Muller kept the score 2-1.

QPR comes to Vicarage Road next Saturday, November 22. Kick off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Barnsley 0-0 at the Half

No score, no bookings, 50/50 on possession. Just a solid back-and-forth that can end up being anybody's game.

Watford to Host Spurs in Round 5 of the League Cup

Tottenham Hotspur will visit Vicarage Road the week of December 1 to decide who gets to go to the semi-finals. Premier side Tottenham is struggling this year but so are the Hornets. I've not seen the odds, but I expect Watford is the underdog despite home field advantage.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

LC: Swansea City (1-0)

Revenge!! On to Round Five. No scoring in a second half marred by six yellow cards. Picking up the bookings for the Hornets were Priskin, Bromby, Mariappa, & Williamson. It was hard-fought with both squads using all three subs, but Watford has made it to the final eight.

The draw for the Round Five ties will be held this Saturday (please not Man U, please not Man U) with matches held the week of December 1.

Next League match for Watford is this Saturday, November 15th at Barnsley. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

1-0 at the half

A right-footed shot from 12 yards out by Lee Williamson (asst. Smith) is the only scoring in a fairly even match. So far the shake-up in the line-up has paid off. With luck the recently porous defense can hold up another 45 minutes.

LC: Game Day Swansea City - Round 4

Five player changes from Sunday's loss to the Swans: Marippa, Bromby, McAnuff, Ross Jenkins, & Tommy Smith - can't hurt.

Swansea City (1-3) 4-3-9 15 pts.

Watford blows a first half lead at Liberty Stadium to mark their fifth game in a row without a win in Malky MacKay's debut as gaffer.

It's been a rough week for me as well and I didn't get up for the 8:00 whistle so I've linked in the BBC report.

The rematch is in two days as the Hornets return to Wales for Round Four of the League Cup. Kickoff is 1:45 St. Louis time.

The One That Got Away

Villa loves Ash!

Ashley Young, once Watford's leading scorer, signs a four-year deal with Aston Villa.

Aidy Out!!

After a disappointing fall in the table in the last half of last season and a poor start this year, Aidy Boothroyd was sacked as Watford's manager yesterday.

Aidy lead the squad to the Premiership two seasons ago but, after relegation back to the Championship and the sale of their top players, the club has struggled and is lying two goals outside the relegation zone.

Malky Mackay will be caretaker manager until someone can be found.

I, for one, am disappointed. I think he did what he could with with the talent he had left after Ben Foster went back to United, Ashley Young was sold off and Mahon & King departed. Where the parachute money and the signing funds went is baffling though the money we've wasted on Poom & Ellington may explain a lot of it.

Look for more shake-ups both on & off the pitch.

Saturday, November 01, 2008

Blackpool (3-4) 4-3-8 15 pts.

Displaying a stunning inability to hold a lead, the Hornets dropped their third match in a row in the pouring rain at Vicarage Road today.

Watford held the lead on three separate occasions only to lose the match in added time. Poor defense was the culprit, wasting a fine performance from Watford's front line. Said Boothroyd, "I've never been more irritated by a second half defensive performance than that." He lauded the offensive performance today, especially by striker Grzegorz Rasziak, but noted of the defense ". . . you can't compensate for stupid, glaring errors that we made today."

Rasziak set the tone early, back-heeling the ball to Wil Hoskin who found the goal in the fourth minute. Both side played attacking football and Keith Southern scored the first of three equalizers when play developed off a free kick taken as the result of a John Eustace foul.

Rasziak headed a goal in (asst. Jon Harley) in the 36th minute to regain the lead for the Hornets, a lead they held into the half despite a flurry of play to end the first half.

Ben Burgess evened the match up once again in minute 56 left-footing a shot in from 18 yards out, but a Tommy Smith penalty kick in the 68th minute gave Watford their final lead of the match.

The 13,517 in attendance at the Vic watched in shocked disbelief as the lead and, at first, two points disappeared as Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored with five minutes left in regulation time, then saw the final draw point melt away in the rain as Alan Gow found the back of the net from 12 yards out in the final seconds of injury time.

Mat Sadler, Jay DeMerit, and especially Eustace all played poorly today. What happened to the defender-rich squad we had in need of strikers?

Next match is a League contest at Swansea City. Kickoff is 8:00 am St. Louis time.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Preston North End (0-2) 4-3-7 15 pts.

Not having won at Deepdale since Jimmy Carter was president, inertia, at least, was working against the Hornets. Watford started strong but eventually the Lilywhites to possesion of the match. Scoring was held off until late in the first half when Billy Jones headed a goal in from twelve yards out (asst. John Parkin). There were few shots on goal for either squad but eventually PNE found the back of the net again, this time from 25 yards out in minute 68 as Ross Wallace picked off an assist from Paul McKenna and left-footed the ball in leaving Watford only two points clear of the relegation zone.

Bad news: I couldn't get to the computer by 1:45 - Good news: I'd been flummoxed again by unsynchronized shifts off Daylight Saving Time so I wasn't too late.

Jay DeMerit & Darren Ward were back in the line-up and Grzegorz Rosiak started his second match today at striker.

The next match is All Saint's Day, November 1, against Blackpool. Kickoff should be 10:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, October 25, 2008

Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-3) 4-3-6 15 pts.

Watford came out fighting in the second half - a cross by Tommy Smith in minute 48 found its way to John-Joe O'Toole and from there into the net to equalize.

Poor play by Leigh Bromby in the 71st minute let Michael Kightly slip past and drop a pass to a waiting Michael Gray who left-footed it from six yards out to give the Wolves the match.

Despite the score, the Hornets played quite well, bouncing back from the deficits and could have swung the match the other way if not for two goal line clearances from former L*t*n Town defender Kevin Foley.

The next match is Tuesday, October 28th at Preston North End. Barring confusion about Daylight Savings, I think the kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Wolverhampton 1-2 at the Half

If the Premiership season of 2006 - 2007 was the season of the 85th minute concession, this must surely be the season of the early goal against.

I barely get my ass in the chair when confusion in the Watford defense lets Chris Iwelumo score the opening shot 40-something seconds into the match.

To their credit, the Hornets battled back and Grzegorz Rasiak, making his first start in place of the suspended Tamas Priskin, found the rebound of a Wil Hoskins screamer lying at his feet and tapped in the goal, his first since coming to Watford on loan from Southampton at the start of the season.

The Wolves got their chance to regain the lead when a Leigh Bromby foul on Iwelumo in the fortieth minute lead to a Karl Henry free kick. The ball was tapped to David Jones, confounding Richard Lee and giving Jones the goal.

Anybody's game at this point.

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Cardiff City (2-2) 4-3-5 15 pts.

Tamas Priskin got himself sent off and let Cardiff City rebound from a 2-0 deficit to draw today's match.

I was on the road and in a meeting for the bulk of the match, so I'll defer to the Beeb for the description.

John-Joe O'Toole & Will Hoskins put the Hornets two up in 24 minutes, but ended up playing a man down for over an hour after Priskin took a poke at Darren Purse.

We're not playing well enough this season to let two points slip past us like that.

Next match is Saturday, October 25 at Vicarage Road against the 8-1-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, October 18, 2008

Southampton: (3-0) 4-2-5 14 pts.

The Hornets returned from the International break to rack up three points on three goals at St. Mary's Stadium.

A wild start saw a foul and yellow card by keeper Richard Lee at the edge of the penalty box. Lee managed to parry David McGoldrick's penalty shot to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.

Tamas Priskin responded with his first of two goals (asst. Sadler) in the tenth minute. John Eustace picked up the second yellow and Adrian Mariappa's foul on Ryan Smith lead to the Saint's second penalty shot, this time by Paul Wotton, and Lee's second penalty save.

Watford managed two more yellow cards from Lee Williamson and Jon Harley before Eustace made the lead 2-0, heading a rebound off the post into the net.

Despite the score, Southampton controlled the game through most of the first half and blew numerous scoring opportunities including at least two empty net shots.

Watford, however, took advantage of what opportunities presented themselves and Priskin back-heeled his second goal in the 41st minute.

The gaffers settled both sides down at the half and the half-time score stood despite Priskin having a couple more chance to get the hat trick.

All-in-all an undeserved three points for Watford, but a welcome three points.

The next match is Tuesday against Cardiff City at Vicarage Road. I will be in Madison but they have city-wide wi-fi so hopefully I can catch the game at the airport on my way out. Kickoff is 1:45pm St. Louis (and Madison) time.

Monday, October 06, 2008

Preston North End (2-1) 3-2-5 11 pts.

I was travelling Saturday so I'll post the BBC's account of the game.

Watford gave up the early goal again with St. Ledger scoring in minute five, but Watford got the equalizer from Harley in the 12th minute and the sweetener on Tommy Smith's fiftieth goal for the club in minute 21.

Good news: Jay Demerit & Tamas Priskin were both back from injuries.

Bad news: Eustace sat out with a thigh injury and Lee was complaining of a groin pull after the match. Fortunately, the league is off for the International break.

Next match is October 18 at Southampton.

Damien Francis to Retire

Unable to recover from knee injury and on the advice of his physicians, Francis announced his retirement today at age 29.

Francis joined the Hornets at the start of the 2006 - 2007 season and had 43 appearances and six goals with the club during his tenure.

Elton John Kerfuffle Over Club Finances

Voicing what everyone else is thinking, Sir Elton tore into the management of the club Wednesday, questioning where the money from transfers & parachute payments have gone.

In response, Chairman Simpson issued a statement on the club site, pointing out the payroll has grown to nearly three times that in place when Boothroyd arrived and that the club had broken its former transfer fee record (though God knows they got squat for it - ed).

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Burnley (2-3) 2-2-5 8 pts.

Lots of new faces for Watford and at least one old one for Burnley in this shooting match.

The Hornets picked up Mark Tyler on loan from The Posh (Peterborough) to replenish the dwindling keeper ranks and Wolverhampton Wanderers loaned us Darren Ward to plug the back ranks with Jay DeMerit still not ready to start.

What, you may ask, happened to Sam Sodje who was brought in for that very reason from Reading for the Sheffield United match? He aggravated an injury and was returned to Reading.

On a brighter note Mat Sadler was back in the line-up after a knee injury and Tamas Priskin came on from the bench late in the match. Richard Lee filled the net and ex-Hornet Clarke Carlisle started for Burnley.

Ward made himself felt in the first six minutes, heading the ball to Will Hoskins who drilled a six-yarder to give Watford the lead. Unfortunately a handball by Leigh Bromby set up a penalty kick in minute 25 that Graham Alexander converted into the equalizer for the Clarets.

Play went back and forth until Watford began putting on the pressure near the end of the first half. Finally into added time, Hoskin unleashed a shot from twenty yards out only to have it deflected by Carlisle. Lee Williamson was there to catch the rebound and set a cross back to Hoskins who scored on the follow-on from six yards out.

The lead only lasted for the half-time break as Martin Patterson found a cross from Wade Elliott to tie the match once again in the first minute after play resumed. Elliot got his own chance in the 69th minute when he headed in a cross from Chris McCann from six yards out to give Burnley the win.

I'll be on the road for the next match (I've yet to figure out how to get Three Counties Radio in my car as I tool down I-70), but it will be back at Vicarage Road this Saturday, October 4 for the first of two matches next month against Preston North End. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

League Cup Round 4 Draw

The Hornets are on their way to Wales for the fourth round of the 2008-09 Carling Cup. The match, announced Saturday, will see Watford travel to Liberty Stadium to take on League One squad Swansea City. The Swans have beaten Brentford, Hull City & Cardiff City to advance to round four.

The match will take place the week of November 10.

Saturday, September 27, 2008

Sheffield United (1-2) 2-2-4 8 pts.

With only two shots on goal for Watford, a weak Hornets squad walked away empty-handed.

One of those shots was a header by John-Joe O'Toole that came off a rebound from a Leigh Bromby shot, equalizing from five yards out in minute 56. The tie score only lasted ten minutes as James Beattie headed a perfect cross from Sharp to give United the win.

Ex-Hornet Darius Henderson was given a warm reception by the visiting Watford fans, coming on for Beattie late in the match.

The Hornets' 8 points leave them only 3 points above the relegation zone. The injury-plagued club's next match is Tuesday, September 30 at Burnley. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Sheffield United: 0-1 at the Half

The Hornets lost their second keeper in as many weeks as Scott Loach, making a save to prevent the Blades second goal pulled a muscle in his side. With Poom down, that leaves Lee, barely recovered from his own injuries, as our sole keeper.

Injuries have troubled Watford recently. Sam Sodje was acquired on loan for a month from Reading to replace the ailing Jay DeMerit and started today. He's not started for Reading yet this season and seem a bit lost on the pitch today.

I missed the sole goal by Gary Speed (asst. Sharp) in the 2nd minute, not getting logged into MatchLive until two minutes later. United's had more control of the match, but otherwise it's been quiet.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

LC: West Ham United (1-0)

The Hornets are on their way to the fourth round of the League Cup thanks to an own goal by Hayden Mullens in the 70th minute and a handful of saves by Scott Loach.

Watford nearly evened up the time of possession as they clamped down after the goal. Jon Harley & Dale Bennett came in after the goal for Tommy Smith & Lee Williamson in an effort to preserve the lead. The tactic paid off and Watford is on to the next level.

Richard Lee suited up on the sidelines and, as the folks on GloryHorns pointed out to me, is not as injured as I thought.

The next match is at Bramall Lane against a battered Sheffield United, losers of a 6-0 rout today at Emirates Stadium against Arsenal. Kick off is 9:00 am St. Louis time this Saturday, September 27.

Nil - Nil at the Half

Got dragged into a meeting and missed most of the first half. Two stats leaped out at me: time of possession ran nearly 2-1 in West Ham's favor, but despite that Watford uncorked seven shots to the Hammer's five.

Game Day - West Ham United

League Cup action today as the Hammers visit Vicarage Road. The squads met last in the Premiership in 2007 and the Hornets have had West Ham's number in the recent past. The good guys are 11-4 favorites in the wagering.

A couple of changes for Watford -- Scott Loach in the net, Jordan Parkes in the backfield, Ainsworth, Al Bangurra, and Ross Jenkins rounding out the changes. Kickoff is in about 10 minutes.

Go 'Orns!!!!

Saturday, September 20, 2008

Reading (2-2) 2-2-3 8 pts.

A wild-and-woolly second half saw three goals and the ejection of Aidy Boothroyd.

Not letting the events of the first weigh heavy on them as they took the field after the break, the Hornets found an equalizing goal from Tommy Smith in minute 57 as he drilled a right-footer into the low center of the net (unassisted).

Seven minutes later Watford took the lead when John-Joe O'Toole did what he does best, charging the net to find a short pass from Will Hoskins waiting for him. After drilling the ball into the lower right of the net, the referee found John-Joe's celebration a little too enthusiastic and showed him the yellow card.

Malky Mackay shepherded the squad in Aidy's absence and the Hornets held the lead until a John Eustace foul on Shane Long lead to a penalty goal by Steve Hunt t even things up in minute 87. To add insult to injury the first half goal was changed to an own goal by Eustace.

The match was marred by failure of the officials to keep control of the proceedings though a disallowed goal (foul) for the Royals helped to even out the injustices of the first half.

Watford's play was lackluster and they were lucky to earn a point from this match. Of bigger concern is the injury to Poom. Richard Lee is still unavailable and Scott Loach is not quite ready for the full responsibility of a team at this level. We need to look to the loan market.

The next match is Tuesday's League Cup tie against West Ham United at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Half Time 0-1

An early injury to Mart Poom & a controversial goal marked the first half of play as a demoralized Watford team fought to keep the score close.

Two minutes in the Watford keeper dislocated his shoulder after going up for a header and landing hard. Scott Loach was brought in and the young goalie has manage a couple of save to keep it close.

The big controversy of the match erupted ten minutes later following a Reading corner kick. In the ensuing scramble, an off-target shot by Noel Hunt hit John Eustace who was standing wide of the goal. The linesman, thinking his was in the net, gave Hunt the goal. The fans & players saw the flag as an offside call and played on -- only to have the delayed goal credited.

The fans are enraged, treating the linesman to chants of "Linesman, Linesman give US a goal" and the wind went out of the Hornets.

We'll see if they can regroup. Aidy's already used two substitutions, bringing Lionel Ainsworth in for Jobi McAnuff.

Game Day - Reading

Coming off a 6-0 trouncing of Sheffield Wednesday, the Royals visit Vicarage Road today. Tomas Priskin & Lloyd Doyley are both sitting out with hamstring injuries -- Will Hoskins & Adrian Mariappa filling the gap. Full line up:

New League Football Podcast Available

A weekly offering hosted by BBC's Mark Clemmit. It's free and available from iTunes or at www.football-league.co.uk. Today marks the first episode.

If you're not a subscriber already, I'd also recommend the BBC World Football podcast and the Up All Night call-in podcast hosted by Dotun Adebayo. Very entertaining.

Plymouth Argyle (1-2) 2-1-3 7pts.

Watford came out attacking again but the damage continued in the second half.

A hand ball by Jay DeMerit lead to a penalty kick that Luke Summerfield converted into a 2-0 lead for Argyle in the 72nd minute. A minute later Tommy Smith fouled Summerfield and was booked for unsporting behavior.

The score stood at 2-0 until the last seven minutes when Smith took a shot off a corner kick that missed but was followed up eventually by John-Joe O'Toole to close the gap to one goal with a right-footer into the bottom of the goal from six yards out.

Overall another lackluster performance by the squad. Next match is this Saturday, September 20 against Reading at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Plymouth Argyle 0-1 at the Half

The Hornets came out strong with a shot by O'Toole and a follow-up by Lee Williamson in the fourth minute that was cleared out. They maintained the pressure for the first twenty minutes or so but Argyle fought back.

Karl Duguid managed a left-footer from 18 yards out that took the wind out of Watford. The squads are nearly even on shots, corners, fouls, time of possession, etc. but, alas, not on score. How Watford handles this half will be indicative of the class, or lack thereof, we can expect from this squad this season.

Game Day - Plymouth Argyle

The last-place Pilgrims visit Vicarage Road today as the Hornets hope to improve on their 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday Saturday (diagram that sentence Mrs. Putnam!). The starting XI are the same as Saturday, hopefully with O'Toole dropped back a bit.
Last season against Argyle, Watford lost at home and drew at Home Park. Kickoff is in one minute - Clive Penton the referee.

SLU Nil-Nil UConn

The Billikens played #4 University of Connecticut to a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods Saturday night. I was joined at the match by Travis and we met Mr. & Mrs. Mojo at the stadium under the threatening skies. The rain held off but the pitch was still obviously soft at the 7:00 pm kickoff from the day's rain.

SLU controlled the tempo in the first half, their tight midfield relieving UConn of the ball repeatedly in the first fifteen minutes. Play settled into a groove for the rest of the half with the Huskies having few chances but playing a tight defense that allowed SLU only three shots to UConn's two.

Both squads played looser in the second half, UConn getting more time near the SLU net and the Billikens taking more shots and giving the Huskies less time to fill in the defense.

Scoreless at the end of regulation, the sides played more aggressively yet no ball found the net in the two ten-minute overtime periods. Had SLU played the same attacking football in the first half that we saw in overtime, they may have walked away with a win.

Kyle Patterson was much improved over pre-season, getting a shot on goal and earning the squad a number of corner kicks. Brandon Barklage managed two shots on goal as well. Dado Hamzagic left in the first period and did not return - no word on why.

For UConn, I was much impressed with their mid-fielder Akeem Priestly, a terriffic dribbler and play-maker and one-time Junior member of the Reggae Boyz.

Next match is Saturday, September 20 at Hermann Field against Denver. Kickoff is 7:00 pm.

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Sheffield Wednesday (0-2) 2-1-2 7 pts.

A bit of a lackluster match by both sides. The Owls got an excuse-me goal off the back heel of Marcus Tudgay in minute 22, squirting away from Mart poom and into the net. It stood 0-1 Wednesday at the half.

Tommy Spurr managed an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to put the match out of reach for the Hornets.

An uneventful game, unmarred by an excess of shots on goal (3 for Wednesday, 2 for Watford) or corners (3 each). As Aidy said, it was an average effort and they were beat from the start.

One criticism was the use of John-Joe O'Toole up front. The commentators pointed out, and I agree, that John-Joe seems to play better attacking from mid-field rather than waiting on a pass near the net. He's shown the ability to beat and/or fool the defenders when he is on the move. I hope to see him back in his normal slot Tuesday.

The next match is 1:45 pm (St. Louis time) Tuesday afternoon at Vicarage Road against Plymouth.

Game Day - Sheffield Wednesday

Back from the International Break, the Hornets take their game and a new away kit to Hillsborough to try to snag three points from the Sheffield Wedneday Owls. Watford has won the last three meetings with Wednesday. Starting line-up is:

Poom
Bromby DeMerit Doyley Harley
Eustace McAnuff Williamson
Smith Priskin O'Toole

Ipswich Town (2-1) 2-1-1 7 pts.

Kickoff was pushed back to 11:15 (I think to accommodate TV broadcast in the UK).

A mind-fart (Mart?) by Poom lead to an early lead by the Tractor Boys and set the Hornets back on their heels for the first half. An easy clearance by Poom ended up directed at Counago who said thank-you-very-much and plopped the ball in the net in the second minute. Other chances by Ipswich Town presented themselves as the first half progressed, but none could be converted to a goal.

Aidy made the right move at the half, replacing Academy call-up Jordan Parkes with John-Joe O'Toole. The attacking mid-fielder got things rolling in the 59th minute when his blocked shot lead to Lee Williamson's in-swinging corner. The corner found John Eustace's head and the ball found the goal for the equalizer.

In the 86th minute O'Toole got his own goal as he dinked in a rebound of Jobi McAnuff's shot to score the winner. All-in-all a good recovery from a weak first half.

Watford goes into the international break in eighth place. Next match is Saturday, September 13 at Sheffield Wednesday. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

LC: Darlington (2-1) aet

Too close.

It took extra time for the Hornets to advance to round three of the League Cup today at Vicarage road. Watford looked to have the match in the books with Damien Francis's unassisted goal in minute 36, but the Pilgrims rallied three minutes into added time in the second half when Gregg Blundell tied the match (asst. Brown).

The sides had skirmished a bit earlier and Blundell and John-Joe O'Toole were both shown yellow cards in the 83rd minute. Lionel Ainsworth joined the rogues' gallery two minutes later.

O'Toole proved the deciding factor in minute 116 when he right-footed a headed assist from Al Bangura from 18 yards out to cinch a berth in round three for the club.

Scott Loach managed four saves in over two hours of play in the net for Watford. The next match is this Saturday, August 30 at home against Ipswich. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

SLU 2-0 Memphis

Dan T. Joined me Saturday for the last of the Billiken's pre-season friendlies. School was back in session for this match and a large, noisy student crowd showed their school spirit for the first half at least.

SLU (I think state law requires I refer to them as No. 8-ranked SLU) dominated the match (22 shots on to 4) but Memphis held on through the half nil-nil, challenging Disbennett at goal twice. The crowd that left at half missed all the good stuff-- sub Scott Wisniewski picking up a goal in minute 63 (asst. Patterson & Viviano) and an unassisted goal by Jimmy Holmes with less than a second left in play (for those familiar with normal football time keeping, NCAA counts down the time instead of up and stops the clock for some play stoppage).

Ross Kaufman filled the net in the second half though the SLU defense kept him from having to dirty his gloves with a save. SLU travels to LA to start their regular season with at match against San Diego this Friday, August 30, in the Loyola Marymount University Fall Classic. Kickoff is 3:00 pm St. Louis time.

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Nottingham Forest (2-3) 1-1-1 4 pts.

Mart Poom's 08-09 clean sheet came to end early in the match today at City Ground. Lee Martin, on loan from Manchester United, found the net from 20 yards out (asst. Cohen) in the 10th minute for the newly promoted Reds.

Poor play by Forest eventually let Tommy Smith equalize in minute 22 with his first of two goals in a back & forth match marred by poor defense.

The Welshman, Robert Earnshaw, put the Reds back on top (asst Moussi) in minute 35 and the score stood 2-1 at the half.

Sixteen minutes into the second half and an assist by Lloyd Doyley gave Smith his second goal, a right footer from 12 yards out. Sadly, Nathan Tyson put the Reds back on top for good eight minutes later and the Hornets dropped a match they were favored to win (15-8 odds) despite being the away squad.

Jobi McAnuff left early with an injury though it did not seem too serious.

Next match is a League Cup tie at Vicarage Road against League Two's Darlington. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time this Tuesday, August 26.

SLU 1-0 DePaul

My first game as a season ticket holder for the St. Louis University Billikens!

Dan joined me and we met up with Mr. & Mrs. Mojo at Robert Hermann field to watch the first pre-season friendly against DePaul last night.

A slight drizzle started before the 7:00 kickoff and was off and on most of the night.

The match started tentatively with the first shot on goal coming well into the first half. Play weighed heavier in DePaul's end for the first part of the match and Scott Wisniewski found the net for SLU only to be called offside.

The match stood scoreless at the half, but coach Donigan's squad returned to the field with a bit more offence culminating in a one-touch pass from Barklage to Dado Hamzagic who lined a 20-yard shot to give the Billikins the only goal of the match.

SLU hosts Memphis Saturday in the next pre-season match. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Charlton (1-0) 1-1-0 4 pts.

I was en route to Iowa and missed this one. We're off to a good start -- always a plus to top the Addicks. Tommy Smith managed the sole goal in minute 28. Poom got the shutout in the net.

League Cup Round 2 Draw

The Hornets will host Darlington, first round winners over Walsall. The Quakers, sixth-place finishers in League Two last season, will visit Vicarage Road the week of August 25.

Message From the Watford Supporters Trust

Amid player sales, delays and condemnations at Vicarage Road, and rumors of administration, representatives of the trustees of the Watford Supporters Trust met with club management. The conclusion:

  • Not cash-rich, but not on the brink of collapse either.
  • No inappropriate misuse of funds has occurred
  • It was expected that players would have to be sold if the Premiership was not regained.

LC: Bristol Rovers (1-0)

Damn this job thing.

I completely spaced off the match at work yesterday. To find out what the BBC had to say, click on the link above. Will Hoskins scored the sole goal of the match with just minutes left. Loach started in goal.

The second round draw should be today with matches played the week of August 25.

I've missed both match so far this season and will be on the road for Saturday's match against Charlton. Kickoff is 9:00 a.m. St. Louis time.

Matt Jackson - the 36-year old defender has announced his retirement

Danny Shittu - has been sold off to Bolton for £2 million after 68 matches and eight goals in two seasons

Moses Ashikodi - the perpetually on-loan striker is loaned to Hereford United until January

Jay DeMerit - Super Jay has been named captain, a role he filled occasionally after Gavin Mahon's departure last season

Crystal Palace (Nil-Nil) 0-1-0 1 pt.

Another season kicks off - this time with a few less familiar names as Watford struggles into the campaign financially.

On the pitch, Mart Poom held Palace scoreless while Julian Speroni did the same against the Hornets despite solid chances from McAnuff, Eustace, Williamson and Tommy Smith.

Sadler, Doyley, Bromby & DeMerit were the starting backs while Harley & Priskin joined Tommy up front in the new-look 4-3-3 for Watford.

Three points would have been nice, but an away draw to start the season in nothing to cry about.

Watford hosts the Bristol Rovers in the first round of the League Cup Tuesday. Kickoff is 1:45 pm. St. Louis time.

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

Friendly: St. Albans City (1-1)

The Hornets managed a draw in their last friendly of the pre-season. Lewis Young, brother of ex-Watford Striker Ashley, claimed the goal for the Hornets. Chris Day was in the net.

Still no more acquisitions prior to the opener this Saturday at Crystal Palace. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Weekend Results

The Watford First XI dropped a 3-2 loss to Barnet despite goals from Jon Harley & Danny Shittu. Loach was in the net for Watford.

The reserves fared better at Tring Athletic at The Grass Roots Stadium (no relation to the "Temptation Eyes" folks), downing Athletic 6-1.

The final friendly of the pre-season is tomorrow, Tuesday August 5 at St. Albans City. Kickoff is 1:45 St. Louis time.

And finally, as predicted, my wife's side won their outing 4-3. While on the pitch at center-back (free substitutions), the opposition did not score once on 'The Disrupta'. Makes a Yank proud.

More Friendly Updates

Jon Harley got his first goal as a Hornet but it was not enough to top the MK Dons Wednesday as Watford fell 1-2. Loach started as keeper while Richard Lee sits out a few weeks to rehabilitate his knee.

Two matches are scheduled for Saturday - the first team travelling to Barnet and the reserves to Tring Athletic. Kickoff for both is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

As luck would have it, I'll be watching my wife play at that time in Ladue. I think I may have the best game of the three.

After Saturday there is one more friendly, at St. Albans City on Tuesday, before the season starts at Crystal Palace next Saturday.

Weekend Friendly Results

One match each by the first team and the reserves netted the Hornets one draw and one win.

Poom started in the net for the first team at Brentford as they garnered a 1-1 draw on Tommy Smith's header.

Cedric Avinel & Theo Robinson scored one goal each in the reserve squad's 2-0 victory over Winchester City. Loach was in the net for the shutout.

The next friendly is Wednesday away against Milton Keynes Dons. Kickoff is 1:45pm St. Louis time.

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Friendly - Wealdstone (1-3)

The second string dropped a friendly yesterday (1-3) as some of the younger players got a chance to start including Scott Loach in the net. Two away friendlies this weekend: Brentford on Saturday (first team) and Winchester City (second team) Sunday. Both matches kickoff at 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Harley In - Rinaldi Out

In the first of the off-season moves yesterday, Watford signed 28-year old left back Jon Harley to a two-year deal. Well respected at Burnley where he transferred after a loan from Sheffield United, Harley is said to be an excellent set-piece taker, a skill which should meld well with the Hornet's style of play.

To make room for him on the team bus, Watford terminated Douglas Rinaldi's contract effective yesterday. The Brazilian midfielder joined the squad in January 2007 to great fanfare, but found few playing opportunities including zero appearances this last season.

Hornets Up for Sale!

Apparently the club has been in talks which have fallen through, but both Chairman Graham Simpson and Lord Ashcroft, the club's largest shareholder, are looking to sell their shares if a buyer can be found.

This is bad news for any signings this summer as it is unlikely that the club will want to tie up funds on the brink of a sale. A statement from the Chairman is anticipated tomorrow.

Ian Harte Rumors

With no definitive signings in the off-season yet, rumor is that Watford is close to signing left back and Irish National team member Ian Harte. Harte established his career with Leeds United, played three seasons with Levante in Spain and most recently spent last season in the Premiership with Sutherland. Harte is 30.

Spain 1-0 Germany

I spent a pleasant afternoon at my boss's house yesterday watching the Euro 2008 final with his family and some of his football-loving buddies.

Spain took the lead off a chip shot from Fernando Torres that came at the end of an amazing display of forced will to beat defender Philipp Lahm to the ball. The score stood and Spain captured it's first major title in 44 years.

As the excitement winds down, be encouraged that there are only three weeks until friendlies start for Watford.

It's Spain-Germany

I missed the match (damn work), but Spain topped Russia 3-0, setting the stage for Sunday's final.

My boss has been nice enough to invite the missus & I over to watch, so I'll be taking it in on the big screen. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Cinderella Goes Home

Oh thank goodness for the Euro 2008 tourney! With the Hornets on break, my soccer news would be a choice between the new look of the GloryHorns forum (I suppose I'll get used to it) or 8-0 blowouts of Barbados by the U.S. National Team.

But instead we had a match run right to the final whistle (and still avoid penalty shoot-outs) as a 90th minute goal by Phillipp Lahm ended Turkey's bid for another come-from-behind victory in the their semi-final match.

Turkey, having pulled multiple rabbits out of their collective hat, were down nine men from injury or suspension yet equalized in the final five minutes only to have Hitzlsperger's pass find Lahm open in the final minute of regulation.

It's Spain & Russia tomorrow with the winner facing Germany in the final in Vienna on Sunday afternoon (St. Louis time). ABC will carry the final.

Ellington Off to Derby County

Watford has put Nathan Ellington off on a season-long loan (with option to sign at the end) to Derby County. Ellington, a record ₤3.5 million signing for the Hornets has failed to produce at Watford, scoring just four goals last season.

Derby, coming off a one win, eight draw visit to the Premiership last season will pay Ellington's salary as well as a 'significant', yet undisclosed, loan fee to have his services as they attempt to rebound back out of the Championship League next season.

Ellington will be rejoining skipper Paul Jewell, Nathan's coach at Wigan.

England Tops US 2-0 at Wembley

Why now? After botching the penalty kick against Man. U, John Terry managed to head in a Beckham cross to put England ahead in the first half. Steve Gerrard doubled up in the 59th minute (asst Barry) to hand the US their first loss in 2008.

DeMerit did not suit up for this match, but Freddie Adu saw action last in the game.

Calling Mr. Lee

Mart Poom was supposed to be the savior that made up for the loss of Ben Foster this season. Instead he spent most of the campaign on the bench and Richard Lee did yeoman's work at in the net for the Hornets.

The May issue of FourFourTwo has a full page article on the Watford goalie. "I've raised my game up a level from last season" says Lee.

Agreed.

Simpson on Boothroyd - Blah, Blah, Blah

Despite the late-season collapse of the club, Aidy has "the Board's total support." Methinks the Chairman doth protest too little. I predict Aidy starts next season, but if there is no improvement we'll be looking for someone cut loose early from another club.

Playoff - Hull City Leg 2 - (1-4)

In precise Watford fashion, the Hornets not only failed to come back, but dropped three more goals in the process to end their season. Caleb Folan, in for Dean Windass, slammed the door shut in minute 70 with a header from 18 yards. Richard Garcia and Nathan Doyle added two goals in the closing minutes.

A disappointing but not unexpected end to the season. Let's hope for some better acquisitions over the off-season than we saw in the last.

1-1 at the half

Twelve goal attempts between the two clubs and a raucous first half sees Watford even with Hull City - still needing three goals to prolong the season. The Hornets have dominated possession and got off to a good start with a right-footer from Darius Henderson (assist Jobi McAnuff) from 18 yards outs. Nick Barmby, carrying a yellow card, equalized in the 43rd minute, leaving Watford with an uphill climb.

Monday, May 12, 2008

Playoff - Hull City Leg 1 - (0-2)

A tentatively optimistic Aidy Bothroyd laid the blame at the feet of the officials Sunday - a Danny Shittu goal was disallowed early and John Eustace was sent off - but Watford will need a three goal margin to continue.

Kickoff is 1:45 pm (St. Louis time) Wednesday, May 14. Should Watford pull this off they will know who their opponents in the playoffs will be as Bristol City/Crystal Palace game will be played tomorrow afternoon (Bristol up 2-1 after the first leg).

Monday, May 05, 2008

Blackpool (1-1) 18-16-12 70 pt. (Season Final)

Watford showed a tiny spark of desire in the person of Tommy Smith to battle back from a quick one goal deficit and score the equalizer that has put them into the playoffs for promotion to the Premier League.

Their opponents will be Hull City. The last encounter saw the Hornets trounced 3-0 at Hull. The first leg will be Sunday, May 11 - kicking off at 6:00 am St. Louis time (I'll be celebrating Mother's Day and will not be able to mark the proceedings). The second leg will be Wednesday, May 14 - this at a more reasonable 1:45 pm.

The Blackpool match had all the makings of a disaster two minutes in when Burgess stunned the visiting crowd with a goal. Blackpool, fighting to avoid relegation, and Watford, fighting to retain their play-off chances played it up-and-down, the only other excitement in the first half being Darius Henderson's yellow card in the sixth minute. Trying the ref's patience on a couple of occasions and getting away with it, Hendo's luck ran out in the sixtieth minute and he was sent off for his second yellow, leaving the Hornets a man down. Undeterred, Tommy Smith found the back of the net two minutes later.

By the final minutes, both clubs realized a draw would accomplish their goals and the end was anticlimactic as Wolverhampton needed a 3 goal win to unseat Watford. The whistle blew, the players stayed on the touchline to await the Wolves result and the Hornets were on their way to the playoffs.

Watford Named Community Club of the Year

Just got the May issue of FourFourTwo to find Watford was named Community Club of the Year in the Football League Awards. To quote:

The Hornets have been busy buzzing around the local community trying to make a difference. As part of the Community Sports & Education Trust, the club have been involved in a Community Sports Project, a Safer Neighbourhoods scheme, a Healthy Schools Initiative, & a Positive Futures project. Award-winning do-goodery

Hats off.

Scunthorpe (0-1) 18-15-12 69 pts.

The poor form continued Saturday as relegated Scunthorpe handed the Hornets yet another loss at home. Watford, able to win only one match in the last thirteen, allowed a goal from 12 yards out from Paul Hayes in the 68th minute to tread water in the standings and put their playoff chances at risk.

Going into the last game here are the possible outcomes:

A win from Watford will secure a playoff berth.

A loss from Watford will kick us out of the playoffs if one of the following scenarios occur:
  • Wins from two of these clubs: Wolves, Ipswich, Sheffield Utd.
  • Wins from one of the above plus a draw or better from Crystal Palace

A draw from Watford will kick us out of the playoffs if:

  • Wolves win by three goals or more and a draw or better from Crystal Palace

The deciding match is next Sunday, May 4 at Blackpool. Early kickoff is 8:00 am St. Louis time.

Monday, April 21, 2008

Crystal Palace (0-2) 18-15-11 69 pts.

Another frustrating loss puts Watford out of reach of automatic promotion. Though they played hard with lots of pressure in the first half, the Hornets crumbled in the second, giving up two goals in four minutes to Ifill and Moses.

Eight yellows marred an already sad performance with four from Watford in the persons of O'Toole, Shittu, Henderson, & McAnuff. Our ₤3.25 million man, Ellington managed to join the game with two minutes of regulation time left. Sad, really.

Two matches left before the playoffs - any more and we'd work our way out of them. The next is at Vicarage Road against Scunthorpe. Kick off is this Saturday, April 26, at 9:00 St. Louis time.

Saturday, April 12, 2008

West Bromwich Albion (1-1) 18-15-10 69 pts.

This point was a pure gift as far as I could tell. Granted, I got to the match late, after all the scoring, but the statistics confirmed what hear of the last twenty or so minutes. WBA held control of the game 2 minutes for every one of Watford's and dominated the second half.

The match started with Eustace back in the line-up and Henderson and Smith up front. Bromby got things started with a goal in minute six after a Jobi McAnuff corner. It stayed that way through the half and up until the 49th minute when Barnett found the back of the net (assist Gera) to equalize. Then it was all desperation defense for the Hornets. Late in the match, a Bednar goal was disallowed when the linesman ruled, probably incorrectly, offside. That bit of luck and a deflected shot a few minutes later kept Watford even in the tables with Bristol City and Hull as well as West Brom. Stoke City is a clear first with a win today over Coventry City.

The match reminded me of last season where we were trying hard not to embarrass ourselves and playing back on our heels awaiting the inevitable goal against.

The nail biting continues next Saturday, April 19 as we host Crystal Palace. Kickoff is 9:00 am.

Barnsley (0-3) 18-14-10 68 pts.

What a stinker. Two goals by Odejayi and one by Foster leave Watford de-pantsed and wondering what hit them. I'm wondering too as a demoralized, tired, Barnsley squad embarrassed us on our own pitch and erased every advantage handed to us during the spate of fluky losses by our top-of-the-table brethren in the last five days.

I could not get the broadcast, but it apparently looked like last season's squad (admittedly against a much weaker opponent). As pog88 put it on the gloryhorns forum:

It's like my old man said, it's almost as if our training consists of a
machine which pumps balls into the air for the players to head it.

The next match is against a much stronger West Brom, away, this Saturday, April 12. Kickoff is 11:20 St. Louis time. God help us.

A Gift From Crystal Palace

Palace held off a late surge to defeat Stoke City 2-1 at Britannia Stadium today, further tightening the race for the top of the Championship League. Watford and Hull are both two points out of first with a match in hand.

Portsmouth - Cardiff in FA Cup Final

It will be a disappointed Barnsley at Vicarage Road Wednesday after their defeat at the hands of Cardiff.

Down a goal after just nine minutes, giant killers Barnsley never recovered. Hope is they will still be off their game Wednesday when they try to deny the Hornet's automatic promotion bid.

Coventry City (2-1) 18-14-9 68 pts.

A rainy day at Vicarge Road but an outstanding result in a match that could have swung either way.

Nathan Ellington electrified the home crowd early on with a left-footed goal from 12 yards out in the 7th minute. The Hornets kept up the pressure for the next twenty minutes or so, but failed to find the second goal. Momentum swung the way of the Sky Blues as the half came to an end.

At the 59th minute, a goal from Best equalized the score and it looked as though Watford would have to settle for a single point, but Tommy Smith found the net in the 79th minute to give the Hornets three points in the standings.

Help came from other quarters today as well as Southampton, fighting to avoid relegation, downed league leader Bristol City 2-0 and Colchester surmounted Ipswich by the same score. The day finds Watford back up to 4th, but only two points out of first.

The next match is Wednesday when the Hornets host Barnsley, who battle Cardiff tomorrow in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Game Day: Coventry City

DeMerit & Bangura sit as Doyley & O'toole return to the pitch for Watford. The Hornets were 3-0 winners at Coventry in October during their ten match unbeaten streak. Full line up:

Lee
Doyley Bromby Shittu Sadler
Smith O'Toole Williamson McAnuff
Kabba Ellington

Predictions

I've been playing with the BBC's Predictor. My best guess (if teams play true to form) is:

Stoke City 82 (4-1-0)
WBA 81 (3-2-0)
--------------
WATFORD 77 (4-1-1)
Bristol City 77 (2-2-1)
Hull City 75 (2-2-1)
Ipswich 74 (3-3-0)

The above assumes WBA over Watford. To get to automatic promotion, the Hornets are going to need to reverse that outcome PLUS help from Bristol City & Hull's opponents PLUS four wins and a draw against Coventry, Barnsley, Palace, Scunny, & Blackpool. Barring exceptionally good luck and class play, we're headed for the playoffs.

Or not.

Poor play by Watford and a bit of luck for Wolverhampton could leave the Hornets watching the playoffs from the pub.

Watford will need to step it up if the want to see the Premiership next season - starting with Coventry City tomorrow.

Brazil U20

I attended the Brazil U20 exhibition last night at the Scott Gallagher complex in Creve Coeur. My God! I forgot how cold and windy it gets on the Missouri River bottom.

This was my first 'official' live soccer match. Although they we 50 minute exhibitions, I'll call them 'official' because everyone was in uniform, they played the national anthems, etc. As luck would have it, I ended up sitting next to National Soccer Hall-of-Famer Harry Keogh. This is the rough equivalent of going to your first baseball game at some AA park and finding yourself next to Kirby Puckett.

The Scott Gallagher All-Stars, all high schoolers, acquitted themselves well. On their heels most of the game (they only managed one shot on goal in 50 minutes) they only let in one goal from a very talented national squad.

Speed and conditioning were the hallmarks of the Brazilians, covering the entire field while the S-G squad were bracketed by the visiting squad. The Brazilians also possessed the ability to shift gears on dime as a unit - their bursts of speed putting the home squad in a reactionary mode. The All-Stars seem to have the edge on aggression and, surprising to me given Brazil's reputation, ball control.

Despite freezing my toes off, I had a blast.

Hull City (0-3) 17-14-9 65 pts.

Aidy Boothroyd's comment said it all "We didn't put anything out there today, we just put eleven shirts on".

The telling moment came when Aidy pulled our multi-million dollar striker, Nathan Ellington in favor of moving Danny Shittu to the front. Nice try, but we still ended up 1) being shut out 2) giving upp another goal and 3) losing Steve Kabba to suspension with a red card in the 75th minute. Arrgh!!

The Hornets have slid to fifth place. Bristol City defeated Norwich 2-1, thankfully Sheffield Wednesday equalized against Stoke, and West Brom defeated Colchester.

The next match is Saturday, April 5 at Vicarage Road against Coventry City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.
