Blackpool nil-nil Watford 6-8-9 26 pts

About as dull as a nil-nil draw can get. Each squad had spells of sleepwalking and missed opportunities but a draw on the road is a draw on the road and another week away from relegation.

The next match is Boxing day at Vicarage Road against Malky Mackay's Cardiff City. Kickoff is 6:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Watford 1-1 Leeds United 6-7-8 25 pts.

Watford concedes a heartbreaking goal to Leeds on the last kick of the match to let two points slip out of their grasp.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee, Michael Kightly, walked the ball into the net as part of a two-on-two that finished with Kightly's right-footer into the bottom right corner of the net in the 27th minute to put the Hornets up 1-0. Both sides played aggressively, but the opportunities were thwarted until the end of the match.

A chance to slam the door was missed when Marvin Sordell failed to convert a penalty shot with two minutes to go and a Nyron Nosworthy challenge on Mika Vayrynen set up a Robert Snodgrass penalty shot in the last seconds of the three minutes of injury time. Snodgrass sent Scott Loach the wrong way and Leeds salvaged a point.

The draw, which saw Lloyd Doyley's return to the pitch, extended the Hornet's unbeaten streak to 5 games.

The squad sits 5 points clear of relegation. The next match is at Blackpool, Saturday, December 17. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

FA Cup: Watford Draws Bradford City at Home

Third Round draws for the FA Cup were held this weekend and Watford will host League Two side Bradford City (let's see how many times I say Brentford instead of Bradford before the tie is over).

The match will take place the weekend of January 7-8. Time TBD.

Ipswich Town 1-2 Watford 6-6-8 24 pts

A terrific burst of goals and Watford came from behind to prevent Ipswich from leap-frogging over them in the standings today.

A midfield rush and a Keith Andrews header put the Tractor Boys up 1-0 in the last minute of the first half after bedeviling Scott Loach throughout the half.

The score stayed there for the next 25 minutes until Ibrahima Sonko fouled Marvin Sordell in the penalty area. Sordell coolly sent David Stockdale the wrong way to slot the goal.

Four minutes later Troy Deeney found a rebound from a Mark Yeates shot to give Watford three points in the standings. The Hornets rest four points clear of the drop zone at present.

The next match is Saturday, December 10 at Vicarage Road when we host Leeds United. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Keepers? Keepers?

It may have nothing to do with Adrian Mariappa's own goal Tuesday, but the club has made two (well, one & a half) moves to bolster their keeper ranks:

Jonathan Bond has been recalled from Forest Green Rovers and Watford's training academy has put out the call for tryouts for young keepers.

New Gig for Aidy

Former Hornets manager Aidy Boothroyd, without a squad since being let go from Coventry City in March, has landed a spot at League Two side Northampton Town. Aidy replaces Gary Johnson, who was sacked after the Cobblers' 4-4-11 start. The squad is winless since Oct. 1.

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Watford 2-2 Bristol City 5-6-8 21 pts.

A muffed backpass cost Adrian Mariappa an own goal and Watford two points in the standings.

Carl Dickenson put the Hornets ahead with a strike out of nowhere in the 25th minute, lighting up a match that had been plodding along to that point. Craig Beattie's first goal as a Hornet came in the 42nd minute, a rebound from a Mark Yeates shot that left David James sprawling, to give Watford a two-goal lead.

It was almost immediately cut back to one as Marvin Elliott answered the goal two minutes later.

The Watford lead lasted only through the half when Mariappa's backpass hopped over Scott Loach's foot a scant minute into the half and Watford spent the rest of match defending the draw.

With 21 points, Watford sits just above the logjam of four squads struggling to avoid the last relegation spot.

The next match is Saturday, December 3 at Ipswich Town. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sordell Iffy For Tomorrow

Marvin Sordell's ankle injury has been labeled 'touch & go'. Don't expect him in the line-up tomorrow.

Saturday, November 26, 2011

Doncaster Rovers nil-nil Watford 5-5-8 20 pts.

A spirited draw, marred only by the departure of Marvin Sordell 35 minutes into the match due to injury.

With Rene Gilmartin on loan to Yeovil Town and Jonathan Bond at Forest Green Rovers, the backup keeper role fell to academy keeper Jack Bonham. John Eustace was back in the line-up as Jonathan Hogg served his suspension for his fifth yellow.

Despite the point, Watford is only three places and 1 point clear of relegation.

The next match is Tuesday, November 29 at Vicarage Road against Bristol City. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Flake

I was all set to write about how, after two weeks of turmoil in the front office at Watford PLC or Watford Sport Enterprise or whatever they're calling themselves these days, Hornets owner Laurence Bassini was to attend a supporter Q&A sponsored by BBC Three Counties Radio.

Except he's not.

A quick check of the Watford Observer reported a cancellation due to health reasons. Again. To bring you up to speed:

Tuesday, Nov. 8 - Bassini blows off the scheduled fan forum due to illness. Graham Taylor 'apologizes' on his behalf, stating that while we have to believe his excuse, reliability is not Bassini's strong point and sometimes he 'acted on a whim'.

Wednesday, Nov. 9 - Bassini apologized and explained his absence

Thursday, Nov. 10 - Bassini tells the Watford Observer he would resign in the next 24 hours as Director because of GT's Tuesday night comment.

Friday, Nov. 11 - Bassini threatens to withhold £1 mil unless Taylor apologizes.

Tuesday, Nov. 15 - A six man Executive Committee is appointed to run the club - no Bassini, no Taylor.

Wednesday, Nov. 16 - The club's Annual Report is issued showing a £4 mil loss for the '10-'11 season.

Thursday, Nov. 17 - Bassini & Taylor issue a joint statement stating they have 'drawn a line' under their spat and are going forward in the best interest of the club.

Saturday, Nov. 19 - Watford Wins! 2-0 over Portsmouth (what? football?). Bassini attends and reportedly looks fine.

Monday, Nov. 21 - Watford Observer reports Q&A a go.

Tuesday, Nov. 22 - Bassini 'postpones' Q&A.

I'm not sure what credibility the man has left. This is no way to run a club.

Kightly Loan Extended Another Month

Michael Kightly, who scored the first goal of Saturday's match against Portsmouth, has had his loan to Watford extended until Jan. 3. The Wolverhampton Wanderers have reserved a 24-hour call-back provision in the loan however.

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Watford 2-0 Portsmouth 5-4-8 19 pts.

A pair of goals by Michael Kightly and Marvin Sordell bracketed the first half and provided all the scoring for the match.

Kightly, in his last scheduled match on loan to the Hornets, plunked one in from just outside the penalty area 80 seconds into the match.

A corner from Mark Yeates set up Marvin Sordell's goal in the last minute of regulation of the first half and Watford held Pompey scoreless to nab three points at home in their third straight home win.

The next match is at Doncaster, Saturday November 26. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Why I Love the BBC World Football Podcast

Despite the fact that it is produced by the BBC and despite being dedicated to football world-wide, the October 29 podcast/broadcast managed to cover both SLU-alumni defender Tim Ream AND wrestler Rufus R. Jones!

Monday, November 07, 2011

Middlesborough 1-0 Watford 4-4-8 16 pts.

A late start for TV in England and a late end to daylight savings time in the U.S. kept me from being able to listen to the Boro game. Click of the headline above for the Beeb's take.

Today is the first fan forum under Laurence Bassini. If I can swing it, I'll have a listen on Watford Player. Answering questions will be Bassini, Graham Taylor, & Sean Dyche.

Loan Moves

Keeper Jonathan Bond will join ex-Hornets Al Bangura and Eddie Oshodi at Forest Green Rangers for a month on loan while Gavin Massey's loan to Yeovil Town has been extended for an additional month.

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

Watford 1-0 Brighton & Hove Albion 4-4-7 16 pts.

Two in a row for Watford!

A great match for the Hornets, bereft of scoring for the first hour & a quarter, but Troy Deeney found his own rebound in front of the net in the 77th minute to nab Watford their second win in four days.

The three points lifts Watford clear of the relegation zone with Millwall's impending defeat of Conventry City.

The next match is at Middlesbrough Saturday, November 5. A late start and a difference in the end of Daylight Savings Time means kickoff will not start until 12:30 pm St. Louis time.

Saturday, October 29, 2011

Watford 3-2 Peterborough United 3-4-7 13 pts.

A wild & woolly first half yielded five goals, an exciting but more controlled second half offered up none in this three-point effort from the Hornets.

A slate of injuries, including a training injury that kept captain John Eustace off the pitch, found Watford with a set of new formations. Some worked well (Marvin Sordell/Prince Buaben), some did not (confusion between Nyron Nosworthy & Carl Dickenson in the defense).

Sordell was on fire today, setting up the first goal from Mark Yeates in minute 5. The aforementioned confusion in the backfield allowed an equalizer from Lee Frecklington ten minutes later, but a penalty on Buaben set up a Sordell penalty kick in the 31st minute.

Three minutes later, a challenge to Buaben lead to a Yeates free-kick and a failed offside trap by the Posh left three strikers open. The ball found Sordell who headed it in from six yards out.

Peterborough's Emile Sinclair drew it to within one five minutes later thanks to poor play from Dickenson, but the Hornets held on to net the three.

The next match is Tuesday, November 1 at Vicarage Road against new-to-the-Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion. With daylight savings time ending in the U.K., kickoff is 2:45pm St. Louis time.

Defender Nosworthy Taken On Loan through January

Nyron Nosworthy has been brought in on loan from Sunderland to plug the gap left by Martin Taylor who underwent collarbone surgery Monday.

Nosworthy's, 31, arrival spells bad news for the development of Watford's young defenders.

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Defender Swap with Brentford

Adam Thompson has returned from his loan spell with League One side Brentford just in time to see Dale Bennett head to the Bees for a month.

Saturday, October 22, 2011

Hull City 3-2 Watford 2-4-7 10 pts.

A nothing first half from Hull City and single goal from Watford exploded into an exciting match that saw four goals in the second half - unfortunately, three came from Hull.

Though Hull dominated possession in the first half, Scott Loach could have taken a seat in the stands for all the shots on goal they managed. Watford managed but one more, but that one eventually found its way into the goal, first a beautiful cross by Yeates to Troy Deeney who should have had credit for the goal, but it was ruled an own goal off of James Chester.

The Tigers perked up in the second half and equalized when Matt Fryatt beat John Eustace in minute 50.

Watford wasted no time regaining the lead when Chris Iwelumo nodded in a short header in the 56th minute with his first Watford goal. Again, the assist went to Yeates.

That lead only lasted ten minutes as Aaron Mclean found the back of the net from near in.

Watford's chances looked good as Yeates hit the bar and Eustace managed a chance late in the match, but a shocker from Robert Koren from 25 yards out with 30 seconds left in added time handed Watford their fourth straight loss and sunk them well into the relegation zone.

The next match finds Watford hosting Peterborough at Vicarage Road Saturday, October 30. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Leicester City 2-0 Watford 2-4-6 10 pts.

First half goals from David Nugent & Jermain Beckford were all the scoring the Foxes needed to power past Watford.

David Mirfin started for the injured Martin Taylor and Prince Buaben made his first league appearance for Watford, subbing for Michael Kightly, but the Hornets had few chances to put one past Kasper Schmeichel.

The loss leaves Watford hovering just outside the drop zone.

The next match is Saturday, October 22 at Hull City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Taylor Out - May Need Surgery

A knock on Martin Taylor at this Saturday's Crystal Palace match has left him out of the lineup for at least two weeks with a collarbone injury and may result in surgery, a move likely to set him down until after Christmas.

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Watford 0-2 Crystal Palace 2-4-5 10 pts.

I was on the road and missed this one (click headline for the BBC report). It saw the debut of Michael Kightly and the return of Scott Loach.

The next match is Wednesday at Leicester City. Kick off is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Help from the Prem

Watford has picked up the services of Michael Kightly, 25-year old winger from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a month. Kightly's stay will span six matches for the Hornets and bring some much-needed offense.

Sunday, October 02, 2011

Southampton 4-0 Watford 2-4-4 10 pts.

A disputed penalty launched the first goal for Ricky Lambert and the Saints, a deserved one the second for both, and a collapse of the Hornets resulted in the last two.

Rene Gilmartin started again at goal and played a decent first half. He had no chance against the penalties. Watford started strong but faded as their spirit caved in after the second goal by the league leader.

The squad is struggling 3 points clear of the drop zone as the league goes into the international break. When they emerge, they will play Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road Saturday, October 15. Kickoff will be at 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Watford 2-1 Millwall

Man, I suck.

Shortly after the Millwall match, the "From the Rookery End" podcast - podcast! - gets posted and here I am two days after the fact, getting the Millwall post out. I got busy at work after the match and it just skipped my mind until this morning. Apologies.

Watford made but one change going into this match, but it was a major one. Rene Gilmartin started between the posts in his first non-cup match in I can't remember how long. And he performed.

The match, dominated by the Hornets, stayed scoreless until the hour mark. We've all been waiting for the next Lloyd Doyley goal and it looked like he may have scored one in minute 68 - an own goal - but it was forgivingly granted to Liam Feeney to put the Lions up a goal.

Crunch time then for Watford as they faced another home loss, another momentary lapse of defense costing three points, another round of 'what-if?'

It was Carl Dickinson that scored the equalizer in the 78th minute to breath life back into the squad and Craig Forsyth from six yards out with five minutes left in regulation time to catch the rebound after a corner kick and hammer home the winner.

It's unlikely Watford will get as many chances to recover from their errors Saturday as they travel to St. Mary's Stadium to oppose league-leaders Southampton. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, September 25, 2011

Watford 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Despite being the dominant team for most of the match, Watford, in a reversal of the Birmingham game, let Forest capitalize on an error and steal at least a point.

The match, scoreless but controlled by the Hornets, took a turn for the worse at the hour mark when Ishmael Miller jumped all over a mix-up in defense between Carl Dickenson and Scott Loach to net the match's only goal.

The loss pushes Watford back down the table to just one point above the drop zone. Fortunately, the Hornets face another weak sister in Millwall at Vicarage Road this Tuesday, September 27 at 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Barnsley 1-1 Watford 1-4-2 7 pts

Possession: Barnsley.

Shots: Barnsley.

Corners: Barnsley.

But it was Marvin Sordell finding a Mark Yeates header in the 37th minute and plunking it in from six yards out that put Watford ahead in the match and looked like the winning goal.

Barnsley evened up the match, however, when Andy Gray headed one past Scott Loach and there the score lay, earning each side a single point and a comfy spot mid-table for another week.

The next match is this Saturday, September 24 against Nottingham Forest at Vicarage Road. A late start, the match kicks off 11:15 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, September 11, 2011

Reading 0-2 Watford 1-3-2 6 pts.

Football is back!

After a much needed international break, Watford roared back against Reading this weekend, capturing their first win of the season.

Newbie Mark Yeates had a hand (or foot as it were) in both goals, lobbing a free kick over the wall from 25 yards out for the first goal twelve minutes in and feeding the assist to John Eustace for the second goal six minutes into the second half.

Later in the day, Fanninho & I took in the SLU match against defending NCAA champs, the Akron Zips*. SLU, off a double overtime win against Notre Dame, went down 0-4 against a much stronger team, but played with more organization and discipline than I had seen yet this season, falling to set pieces and an inability to adapt against Akron's wing play.

That match was proceeded by a Guinness World Record attempt at the most people dribbling at once (have not heard how that turned out) as well as remembrance activities for 9/11 both pre-match and at the half, including honoring one of the survivors of the WTC attack.

The Watford win lifted them out of the relegation zone into sixteenth place.

I had not paid too much attention to the top of the table and was surprised to see Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton, the 1st & 2nd place finishers in League One last year holding down those two spots in the Championship. A repeat of those standing would have paid long odds at the start of the season.

Watford's next match is next Saturday, September 17 at Barnsley. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

* Zips is short for Zippers, after the popular rubber overshoes manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich company (HQ'ed in Akron at the time) in the 1920's & 30's. The mascot is Zippy the Kangaroo, one of the few female mascots in college sports in the U.S.

Monday, August 29, 2011

Watford 2-2 Birmingham City 0-3-2 3 pts.

Much to like about this match & much to dislike.

For starters, we have the first two home goals of season in the person of Marvin Sordell & Martin Taylor. We also have two equalizers and the salvage of a point in added time - you cannot argue with the spirit of the match. Finally we got to see the return of Andreas Weimann and Jonathan Hogg's debut - both in good form.

On the down side we have the failure to defend against a set piece (Adam Rooney's 39th minute goal) and just plain failure to defend (Chris Wood picking up a lost ball and splitting the defenders to put Birmingham up 2-1).

The Hornet still struggle in the relegation zone and will hopefully make the most of the international break. The next match is at Reading Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Loan Moves

Defender for defender.

Adam Thompson is on his way to Brentford for a one month loan while Tom Aldred's loan spell with Inverness Caldonia Thistle has been cut short with Aldred returning to Watford.

LC: Bristol Rovers (4-2) pen 1 - 1 Watford

One and Done.

I believe this was the first Watford match I’d listened to that went to penalty kicks. It shouldn’t have.

A pair of goals started off the match and a pair of saves ended it for Watford . In between, the Hornets failed to capitalize on their momentum and defeat a side two leagues lower.

Marvin Sordell started the fun in the second minute, tucking a shot into the lower right of the goal, but Matt Harrold wasted no time equalizing in minute five and the score stayed 1-1 through regulation, injury time, and two 15-minute periods of extra time.

The Rover's second taker McGlieish went wide, but the Bristol keeper stopped both John Eustace and Carl Dickinson.

The match marked the first start for David Mirfin and the first appearance for Prince Buaben.

This weekend's match is on Sunday at Vicarage Road. The Hornets host Birmingham City at 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, August 21, 2011

Coventry City nil - nil Watford 0-2-2 4 pts.

It's official.

We're in relegation territory.

I only caught the added time at the end so the BBC report is linked above, but apparently uncalled penalties removed some Hornet opportunities.

Still, a point a game will not keep us in the Championship. Brag about being unbeaten away all you want, but this sucks.

Watford's next match is non-League; the playing of their postponed Round 1 tie at Bristol Rovers. Kickoff is 1:45 St. Louis time Tuesday, August 23.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Watford 0-4 West Ham 0-1-2 1 pt.

Really?! I know they dropped out of the Premier League and all but 0-4?

I was surreptitiously checking the score during a meeting while I was on the road in Ohio today. It went like this:

0-2; Well, damn.
0-3; Crap
0-4; Arrrrgh!

Depending on what Bristol City does tomorrow, we could well be winless and in the drop zone after three games. Not the start anyone expected.

Our next match is Saturday against fellow minnows Coventry City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

A10 Pre-season: SLU 0-2 Louisville

SLU's preseason kicked off today with a match against #1 ranked Louisville. Though just a 'friendly', SLU looked lackadaisical and disorganized. So poor was their ability to keep their shape, it was hard to tell just what formation they were shooting for.

This was nowhere more evident than in midfield where not a few starting hopefuls were constitutionally opposed to running balls down, seemed baffled by approaching balls passed directly to them, and had nary a clue what to do with them when they hit their feet.

Louisville, meanwhile, played a terrific short passing game with a great deal of positional awareness and capitalized on their scoring opportunities.

The Billikens get their next chance at home Friday night against SIUE. Kickoff is 7:00 pm.

Watford 0-1 Derby County 0-1-1 1 pt.

Yesterday's match, the first I've been able to listen to this year between traveling and London riots, started off well for Watford. The Hornets dominated possession and seemed much more organized through the first half.

I had to agree with the Derby Co. announcers (Three Counties feed was too low to hear even cranked up all the way) - it just seemed like a matter of time before Watford scored. Add to that four yellow cards for the Rams and it seemed like it was Watford's to lose.

Well, lose they did. An early goal by Steve Davies in the second half completely unwound Watford's game. All the spark went out of the squad and they were lucky to only drop one goal. After dropping a two goal lead in their first match, Dyche must address this lack of concentration before Tuesday's match against West Ham United at Vicarage Road.

That match starts at 1:45pm St. Louis time. Sadly, I will be in Columbus in the middle of a business meeting.

Riots Force Rescheduling of Cup Tie

Today's first round League Cup tie at Bristol Rovers was postponed at the last minute today due to the ongoing London riots. Officials worried that supporters would have to travel through unsafe areas to reach Memorial Stadium.

The match has been rescheduled for August 23.

Monday, August 08, 2011

Burnley 2-2 Watford 0-1-0 1 pt.

Well, I managed to keep my tradition alive of being in a car driving somewhere during the first match of the season. The BBC match report can be reached by clicking above.

Newcomers Craig Forsyth & Mark Yeates each managed a goal to put the Hornets ahead 2-0 well into the second half, but a pair of goals from the Clarets in a seven minute span spelled the difference between a second place Watford and a 13th place Watford. It should have been three points, but a point away is a point away.

The next match is Wednesday, August 10 at Bristol Rovers. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Stoke City Defender Signed

In the most expensive acquisition of the off-season, the Hornets have picked up well-travelled left back Carl Dickinson. On trial with the club during the friendlies, the 24-year old will net £250,000 plus add-on fees for Stoke now that he's been signed to a 3-year contract.

Thursday, August 04, 2011

Young Defender Signed Through January

Tom James, who's been a trialist for the club, was signed through January. Not likely to play any time soon, he's obviously caught the fancy of Sean Dyche who has brought him up from Midlands Football Alliance side Stratford Town.

Poor Showing at Colchester United

With the season a week away, the Hornets turned in a poor performance in a 1-0 loss to Colchester United.

Chris Iwelumo rested the match, but the rest of the squad were good candidates to be the starting XI next Saturday at Burnley.

The season kicks off at 9:00 St. Louis time.

Hornets Suffer First Pre-Season Loss

A 2-1 loss and a minor injury to Chris Iwelumo resulted from a lack-luster Watford performance Saturday at AFC Wimbledon. The squad has two more friendlies this Tuesday & Saturday before the season opens August 6 at Burnley.

Iwelumo Signs

Watford has picked up Burnley striker Chris Iwelumo with the season just around the corner.

Fan reaction has been mixed to say the least, but I'll judge the signing based on the number of times I had to write his name down for goals or assists vs Watford last year and say we could have done worse in finding a replacement for Danny Graham.

Thursday, July 14, 2011

Watford Signs Prince

No, not the Purple One. And not Kevin-Price Boateng either, but rather another capped Ghanaian, midfielder Prince Buaben. Most recently with Dundee United, the 23-year old had a stint with Ajax earlier in his career, but comes to Watford free of transfer fees.

Mark Yeates Joins Hornets

Mark Yeates joins the Watford squad with a transfer from Sheffield United for an undisclosed amount. The Irish winger signed a two-year contract and looks to play a starting role with the club.

Best Comeback Ever

Taking a break from our irregularly unscheduled Watford news to congratulate the USA Women's team on their quarter-final World Cup win over Brazil and the referee.

Up a goal after 2 minutes, the US squad played tough, if not particularly inspired, ball for the next hour until Marta popped the ball over Rachel Buehler's head to poke in a very likely equalizer. Buehler did what was needed and stopped Marta, allowing a penalty kick in the process.

Fair enough, but referee Jacqui Melksham went on step further, red carding Buehler and putting the US squad down a player for what turned out to be nearly an hour.

Then bad turned to bizarre.

Keeper Hope Solo stopped the penalty kick but the ref brought it back (carding solo in the process) for either encroachment or claiming Solo came off the line before the kick was taken. At any rate Marta scored the rekick and the match was tied at the end of regulation.

Poor officiating came into play again two minutes into the extra time as Marta scored on a play that was clearly offside, forcing the US to play catchup a man down. And play they did.

Having played better with ten than they had with eleven, the US squad pressured a tired and stalling Brazil side well into injury time into the final added period. At one point Erika fell to the ground with no one around her, was strechered off, then unstrapped herself, bounced back up and returned to play seconds after being taken off the field.

Antics like that and the poor officiating had brought any neutrals in Dresden firmly into the American camp and amid shouts of USA! USA!, Megan Rapinoe let fly a long Hail Mary shot that drew Andreia out of position, allowing Abby Wambach to head in the latest goal ever scored in Women's World Cup history to send the match to PKs.

To cut the drama short, the US were 5-for-5 while Solo stopped Dianae's shot to advance to the semis against France on Wednesday.

Great job.

Now back to Watford news . . .

First Friendly a Draw v Boreham Wood

Jonathan Bond was between the sticks (Loach with a pulled muscle) and a young Hornet squad rallied twice to land a draw against the non-league side. Click on the above for the Observer's take, I couldn't even get the result on the Watford FC mobile page Saturday.

The next friendly is the 19th at Wealdstone. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Gavin's Back?

No guarantees, but Gavin Mahon, the bald ex-Hornet that once graced my screen saver, the man who took the captain's armband from now-gaffer Sean Dyche, the Gavin Mahon that 'sez yer a . . .'. THAT Gavin Mahon has been training with the Hornets, a free agent from QPR and on-again, off-again trainee with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dyche has said no guarantees and Gavin is 34. He'll have to earn it if he is to take a valuable spot from one of our youngsters, but it is good to see him in yellow again.

A Pair of Weekend Signings

OK. Technically, July 4th does not a three-day weekend make in England (USA! USA! ...), but Watford inked one veteran and one young 'un over the weekend.

Scunthorpe United defender David Mirfin signed to a two-year contract as a free-agent after his contract expired at Scunny. Mirfin had 25 starts in Scunthorpe's relegation effort last season (OK, so that doesn't sound so encouraging).

Thwarting interest from Tottenham & Arsenal, the club has signed academy striker Bernard Mensah to a three year pro contract.

Finally, training started last Friday and the squad plays their first friendly down the road in Herts at Conference South side Boreham Wood next Saturday. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Cowie Follows Mackay to Cardiff

The thrice-capped midfielder surprised Watford by transferring to Cardiff City yesterday. The 28-year old made 37 league and 2 cup appearances for the Hornets. His departure will leave a big hole in midfield.

To add insult to injury, Cowie was out of contract so no transfer fee is due Watford.

Graham Taylor in FourFourTwo

The July 2011 issue of FourFourTwo features an article on the documentary "The Impossible Job" which followed ex-Watford, then England boss Graham Taylor and the natinal squad as they failed to reach the '94 (US) World Cup. Sadly, it is unavailable on DVD at the moment.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

With former Hornet Ashley Young moving from Aston Villa to Manchester United, Watford stands to reap an add-on stemming from Young's transfer to the Birmingham club in 2007.

Watford will gain 15% of all amounts above £9.65 mil. With the reported transfer fee in the £15 - 20 mil range, that could mean £800K - £1.5 mil for the club.

Sean Dyche Named Manager

Following the path trod by Malky Mackay, assistant manager Sean Dyche has followed Malky to the big office.

Dyche has been the number two for two seasons. A defender for Watford, Chesterfield and a handfull of others, Dyche started his coaching career as the U-18 coach at Watford.

Best of luck to Sean!

Dundee Midfielder Signed

Craig Forsyth is the first player in through the transfer window this summer. The attacking midfielder comes to us from Scottish First Division side Dundee (not to be confused with SPL side Dundee United).

Forsyth has been working on his chops in the Scottish Third Division (level 4) the last three years on loan to Montrose and Arbroath.

Best Wishes Malky

Of course, the biggest news of the summer would hit while I was on the road and armed with nothing but a BlackBerry.

Well, I've overcome my techno-lameness long enough to wish Malky the best of luck with Cardiff City following his resignation this week.

Without a doubt, Malky's done more with the talent dealt him than just about any manager could. His departure will be much more of a blow than that of Danny Graham. I wait with trepidation to learn who will succeed him. Succeed, because it will be unlikely the next gaffer can replace him.

Graham & Buckley Out

Swansea City's £3.5 million bid for league goal-leader Danny Graham has been accepted and Brighton & Hove Albion expect to sign Will Buckley for a club record transfer fee (B&HA's) later today.

Thursday, June 02, 2011

£3 Million . . . Do I hear 4?

The bid for Danny Graham has been upped to £3 million, this time from just-promoted Swansea City. This is an increase over QPR's £2.5m. Norwich? Norwich?

Watford Cut Three - Trim Payroll

The Hornets let go of some expensive "talent" last week with the departure of Nathan Ellington, Liam Henderson, and Mat Sadler - on loan to Preston North End, Rotherham United, and Shrewsbury Town respectively.

Ellington, who cost Watford a club record £3.25 million transfer fee, and Henderson scored only 5 goals between them in 69 appearances.

Sadler put in 30 appearances for the club and played an adequate role as a defender.

The club collects no transfer revenue, but is expected to trim £1 million from the payroll.

£3 Million Turned Down (So Far)

Saracens at Vicarage Road for Another Year

The Watford rugby club have announced they will remain at Vicarage Road for the 2011-2012 season. Another season of bumpy pitch, yes (though the Hornets seem to have adapted their play to it and use it to their advantage), but another season of revenue as well for the cash-strapped club.

Preston North End 3-1 Watford 16-13-17

Well, I blew this one. For some reason I still had the original date of Sunday on my calendar for the final match of the season. Imagine my confusion as I stared groggily at the computer at 6:30 yesterday morning wondering what happened.

Malky gave one of his young Irishmen, Sean Murray, his first start and brought on another, Tommy Hoban, for the experience. Danny Graham set up Andreas Weimann early to give the Hornets an early lead, but the home side answered and then some to leave Watford with more losses than wins for the season.

The next match is Saturday, July 9, a pre-season friendly at Boreham Wood. The 2011-2012 season proper starts Saturday, August 6.

Hornets (Past & Present) in the May FourFourTwo

A number of blurbs of interest to Watford fans in this month's FourFourTwo:

- Malky Mackay in 'The Glaswegians Are Coming . . .'
- An interview will former Hornet youth player Demba Ba
- The phantom goal vs Reading in '08 made the 30 Maddest Refereeing Moments as did the 1994 Holland v England World Cup qualifier featuring on-again/off-again Watford boss Graham Taylor
- Both current keeper Scott Loach and former favorite loanee Ben Foster chimed in with tips in the Performance section

Watford 0-2 Queens Park Rangers 16-13-16 61 pts.

It was 'Wear a Vest for Danny' day in what may be Danny Graham's final home fixture in a Watford kit, but the man of the match was not current Watford star Graham, but former Hornet Tommy Smith.

It look like an old-timer's game with Smith, Heidar Helguson, & Danny Shittu lined up for QPR, but the Hornets current squad held their own against league leaders (and now, league champs) QPR for 77 minutes. The champs showed why they were so, first with an Adel Taarabt goal (Smith assist) then with Tommy scoring a goal of his own two minutes into added time.

The win nets Neil Warnock his seventh promotion as a manager. Elsewhere in the league, Sheffield United and Scunthorpe were relegated. That means both teams relegated from the Premier League with Watford at the end of the 2006-07 season are now in League One.

The final match of the season is next Sunday, May 8 at Preston North End at the groaningly early hour of 6:45 am St. Louis time. I guess if people can get up that early for the Royal Wedding, I can make it up for the finale.

Leicester City 4-2 Watford 16-13-15 61 pts.

From three points to one point to no points, Watford's season ebbed away at Walkers stadium while the Foxes remained (barely) alive.

The match marked Lloyd Doyley's 300th appearance as well as Piero Mingoia's second start in a row.

Marvin Sordell, after coming on in the 16th minute for an injured Andreas Weimann, found his first goal since January in minute 28. Unfortunately, it was answered ten minutes later with a 40 yard boot from Jeffery Bruma.

Undaunted, Sordell replied two minutes later from inside the penalty area to carry a 2-1 lead into the half.

With a draw helping neither club, and Sven-Goran Eriksson smelling weakness in Scott Loach, Leicester began bombing away at the Watford goal.

The payoff came at the hour mark with Ayegbeni Yakubu tying the match. Bruma got his second at minute 73 and Yakubu made it 4-2 two minutes later.

Watford's last match at Vicarage Road this season is this Saturday, April 30, against QPR who secured a place in the Premiership today with a draw against Hull City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, April 23, 2011

Watford 1-0 Barnsley 16-13-14 61 pts.

In a rare reversal of roles, it was Watford that scored before the asses were in their seats today.

A feed from Don Cowie lead to a Troy Deeney shot that dropped off the crossbar. An alert Jon Eustace chested it in and a stunned Barnsley spent the next 89:30 playing catch-up.

The Tykes pressed in the first half, but terrific play by the Watford back four held the score 1-0 to the half.

No excitement until the end from either side and the Hornets walked away with three points, still five away from the playoff zone. Though not technically eliminated yet with three matches left, five teams stand between them and the playoffs.

One match is against table leader QPR, one against drop zone residents Preston North End and the next of these is Leicester City, hosts of Easter Monday's match. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, April 17, 2011

Leeds United 2-2 Watford 15-13-14 58 pts.

If not a 'must win', at least a 'damn well better win if you're serious about getting in the playoffs' game for both squads.

The first half was fairly uneventful with the exception of Ross Jenkins leaving the pitch due to injury.

Both gaffers apparently reminded their players that three points were needed with seven teams fighting for the last playoff spot. To add to the suspense, the BBC lost the signal for the first five minutes or so of the second half.

The sparks began to fly when Luciano Becchio headed in a goal in minute 72. Lee Hodson of all people equalized six minutes later to quiet the crowd.

Then with four minutes of regulation time left, Andreas Weimann tapped in a selfless Danny Graham dribbler for what looked to be the nail in Leeds' coffin.

But no.

With Graham down with an injury, a Barry Bannon corner a scant minute later ended in a Troy Deeney own goal and both squads walked away disappointed.

Watford has failed to beat the teams ahead of them in this home stretch. Maybe they'll have better luck with Barnsley next Saturday, April 23 at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 9:00 an St. Louis time.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Watford 2-2 Norwich City 2 15-12-14 57 pts.

The day started to look like a replay of Hull City when Sam Vokes scored 90 seconds into the match, but this time Watford fought back.

Danny Graham dribbled a shot over the goal, but over it went to level the score in the 26th minute. Graham then had his pick of targets ten minutes later when the Norwich defense let their guard down. He picked Don Cowie who rifled a shot into the underside of the crossbar to put the Hornets ahead.

Paul Lambert's side showed why they're in the hunt for automatic promotion - relentlessly battering Watford's defense until Simeon Jackson finally gained the equalizer in minute 69.

The onslaught continued as the Canaries fought for three points, but the Hornets held at home to earn a point.

The next match is Saturday, April 16 at Elland Road as Leeds United hosts the Hornets. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Watford 1-2 Hull City 15-11-14 56 pts.

Well, I won't be blocking off the play-off dates on the family calender this year.

Watford dropped a quick goal to Hull City and took the entire first half off before they showed any spark of life. A few chances from Danny Graham threatened an equalizer, but the Tigers were fighting for a play-off spot too and simply out-played and out-lasted Watford, slamming the door shut with a second goal in the closing minutes.

Martin Taylor headed in a face-saver (Cowie asst) a minute and a half into added time, but literally too little, too late.

Technically, the Hornets can qualify for a play-off spot still (hell, they can still place second but don't hold your breath). Odds are long though and draws won't get them there.

The next fixture is a toughie against second place Norwich City at Vicarage Road. Kick off is 1:45 pm St. Louis time, Tuesday April 12.

Hornets (and exes) in the April FourFourTwo

The lastest issue of FourFourTwo features opinions from ex-captain Jay DeMerit and the Top 10 Championship players gives a nod to goal machine Danny Graham. The glaring ommission? Malky not in the Top 5 managers! (and Colin Wanker is - the horror!).

Coventry City 2-0 Watford 15-11-13 56 pts.

Still only 4 pts. shy of the playoff zone.

I missed this one (family stuff). See the BBC summary above.

All of the conditions of the sale have been met or waived. The sale of the club is complete.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Middlesbrough 2-1 Watford 15-11-12 56 pts

Andrew Taylor scored his first goal for Middlesbrough since returning to his home club from loan to Watford. The goal late in the first half stifled the Hornet's momentum and, more importantly, played hobs with the discipline the squad has maintained in the last half of the season.

Watford jumped ahead near the half-hour mark when a Don Cowie pass found (who else?) Danny Graham who promptly right-footed it into the back of the net.

The lead lasted all of five minutes when Scott McDonald beat Adam Thompson to equalize. Taylor's goal came in added time at the end of the first half and ended up being the deciding goal.

Adrian Marriappa was shown a red card with about four minutes left in the match and Malky was sent to the stands shortly thereafter.

The Hornets have a week off to regroup before they travel to the Ricoh to face Coventry City April 2. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Ipswich Town 0-3 Watford 15-11-11 56 pts.

Another 3-0 match, this time away, leaves Watford four points of the playoff zone and a goal ahead of the current sixth place resident, Nottingham Forest.

The Hornets made the most of their game in hand, this the rescheduled Boxing Day match at Ipswich Town. The asses were barely in their seats when a Don Cowie cross found the Tractor Boys sleeping (not to mention Danny Graham's head). The BBC has Troy Deeny with the goal on rebound, but the announcers credited the goal to Graham. (And speaking of announcers, that goal elicited the best quote of day: "Ipswich needs shootin' for that.")

It could easily have been 3-0 at the half with two easy misses from Will Buckley & Ross Jenkins, but leave it to Graham to get his second goal (asst. John Eustace) at the hour mark.

Don Cowie bolted the door in added time and gave Watford that slim goal difference advantage over Nottingham Forest.

The win pushes Watford ahead of last season's 53 points with nine matches left. Next match is Saturday, March 19 with Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 10:00 am St. Louis time.

Monday, March 14, 2011

Aidy Sacked at Coventry City

Aidy Boothroyd, former manager of Watford who last steered the the Hornets into the Premier League in the 2006-07 season, has been sacked by Coventry City after garnering only one win in his last 16 league matches. The Sky Blues rest three places and a mere seven points above the drop zone.

Aftre leaving Watford early in the 2008-09 season, Boothroyd found his way back to League football in the 2009-10 season and signed with Coventry in May of 2010.

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Watford 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday 14-11-11 53 pts.

Step 1: Infiltrate your opponents by selling them your top players.

Step 2: Said players get sent off in the first 35 minutes of the their match with you.

Step 3: Bang away at their 9-man squad.

----------------------------------

Granted, Danny Graham had already put Watford ahead with a header from two yards out in the 10th minute, but the Blades' fate was sealed when they went two men down thanks to red cards on Wednesday's two ex-Hornets.

Darius Henderson, in his first start of the season, had already picked up a yellow when a nasty shot on Lee Hodson in the 27th minute earned him a trip up the tunnel. Sadly, Hodson's day was finished as well as he was stretchered off with a brace on his right leg and an oxygen mask (early reports said no break).

Eight minutes later, Lee Williamson joined Hendo after a challenge against Lloyd Doyley. To their (and Malky's) credit, the Hornets avoided retaliation and proceeded to batter the Blades in a disciplined fashion.

In the 58th minute, Adam Thompson failed to head in Don Cowie's effort from the corner, but Martin Taylor knocked in the rebound to go up 2-0.

And it was Ross Jenkins heading in a John Eustace cross with about 5 minutes left that gave Watford another notch in goal difference. All in all, a well-played match from the 'Orns.

Watford is still seven points (& two goals) out of playoff range, but have a game in hand against Nottingham Forest & Leeds United and will face Leeds & Norwich City once more before all is said & done.

Before that though, the next match is Tuesday with Ipswich Town at Portman Road. God help me, I always screw this up at Daylight Saving Time, but I think kickoff is 2:45 St. Louis time.

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Swansea City 1-1 Watford 13-11-11 50pts.

The Mackay/Rodgers clash was all Swans for the first hour, but a tactical change by Malky Mackay picked the lock that let a Danny Graham goal in in the 78th minute from a Troy Deeny pass to equalize the match.

For the first 60 minutes of the match Swansea led on shots, corners, possession, and, most importantly, the lone goal of the match, a 27th minute right-footer by Stephen Dobbie. Malky, playing with a sole striker up front, brought in Marvin Sordell for Will Buckley and converted into a traditional 4-4-2 to create chances at the net.

Create them it did. The Graham goal came off a terrifically timed run and the momentum swung to Watford's favor for the rest of the match. It was not enough for the win, but a point away against one of the contenders for the remaining automatic promotion slot qualifies as a good result.

The next match is Saturday, March 12, when a struggling Sheffield Wednesday, coming off their first win in sixteen matches, travels to Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, March 06, 2011

Watford 1-0 Millwall 13-10-11 49 pts.

It was Danny Graham once again as a Watford double over Millwall signaled their first win in ten matches Saturday. They also managed only their eighth clean sheet of the season, but not for lack of trying.

The Lions had two early opportunities: a Liam Trotter miss in the fifth minute and a Danny Schofield shot that flew over the net in minute 14. Millwall nearly went ahead in the 37th minute when a Schofield cross connected with Martin Taylor's head. The ensuing scramble just prevented the own goal.

Coming out of the locker rooms scoreless, it fell to a Dow Cowie pass to set up Graham and the match's only goal from six yards out in the 51st minute.

Not a pretty match, but a needed victory if Watford is to have any chance of reaching the playoff zone. The next match is (Fat) Tuesday, March 8 at Swansea City against the 2nd place Swans. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Friday, March 04, 2011

Mackay & Dyche Extend Contracts

Gaffer Malky Mackay & assistant manager Sean Dyche have signed three-and-a-half year contracts, extending their current commitments by two years.

I applaud the move. Our on-field management has shown the ability to motivate young players, ply the loan market, and make tactically astute moves on match day. Malky has proved himself a real leader at Watford.

Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Watford 12-10-11 46 pts

Though a draw in the standings, yesterday's match had to go down as a moral victory as Watford played a man down for the last 13 minutes but managed to hold on to the point.

Danny Graham rolled on with his consistent form, heading the ball into the lower center of the net from five yards out (asst. Andreas Weimann - header) to give the Hornets a lead in the 22nd minute.

Watford nearly went two up at the half hour mark, but Stephen McGinn pushed his shot over the crossbar.

Jason Euell equalized in added time at the end of the first half, but both squads came out for the second half pressing for the win.

The back-and-forth continued until an inadvertent hand ball by John Eustace earned him his second yellow of the night and a trip to the bench. Rovers continued to press, but the Watford defense held for the point.

The next match is Saturday, March 5 at Vicarage Road against Millwall, who currently sit one point atop Watford. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Malky Speaks!

The Watford skipper talks to host Mark Clemmit about the academy, why a Scot is helping the future English team, and reversals in form in this week's nPower Football League podcast.

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Watford 1-3 Bristol City 12-9-11 45 pts.

Bring me the head of the ball boy!

A quick throw-in, aided by Watford's two-ball system, let the Robins equalize a half hour into the match and recapture momentum that had belonged to Watford.

Don Cowie made the most of a poorly cleared Danny Graham cross and strode into a shot from 12 yards out to put Watford ahead in the 20th minute. A deflated Bristol City moped about until Nicky Maynard capitalized on the quick throw-in for his first goal since knee surgery.

It looked like a point apiece until Marvin Elliot managed a header past Scott Loach in the 70th minute to put the Robins ahead for the match. Brett Pitman, coming on as a sub, drilled the final goal into the top of the net in added time to give Bristol City their fifth away win of the season.

As an aside, I had to go to Bristol City's site and announcers to catch the match. They are as unimpressed with Vicarage Road's pitch as the Three Counties crew.

With the Hornets drifting about mid-table, they travell to Keepmoat Stadium this Saturday, February 26, to face the Doncaster Rovers. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Reading 1-1 Watford 12-9-10 45 pts

It looked like Malky was going to get a birthday present in the form of three points today, but Reading reignited in the second half while the Hornets failed to capitalize on their momentum in the first.

Loanee Andy Weimann drew first blood in the 27th minute, catching the rebound of his first shot to sink the second from 6 yards out (Danny Graham asst.). Graham then had at least a pair of shots on goal but the Royals' keeper, Adam Federici, refused to let in any other goals and kept Reading in the match going into the dressing rooms at the half.

That persistence paid off when Noel Hunt headed a rebound off the bar into an empty goal to equalize for Reading and salvage a point at home.

The draw leaves both teams adrift mid-table. Watford lies eight point shy of the playoff zone, albeit with a game in hand.

The next match is Tuesday, February 22 at Vicarage Road against Bristol City. Bristol City are the owners of a two-game losing streak. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Watford 2-2 Preston North End 12-8-10 44 pts.

Tactical half-time moves by Malky Mackay made all the difference today at a soggy Vicarage Road as the Hornets came from behind to net a point in the standings.

The good feelings brought on by the return of Lloyd Doyley and Don Cowie lasted - oh - 35 seconds as an early corner caught Watford sleeping and let a Sean St. Ledger goal past Scott Loach.

Watford pressure sought the equalizer but in minute 37, Keith Treacy beat two yellow-shirted defenders, pulled back, and fed a picture-perfect cross to Leon Clarke for the Lilywhites' second goal. That score stood until the half.

Seeing his squad was not clicking, Malky pulled Doyley & Daniel Drinkwater for youngsters Matty Whichelow & Adam Thompson at the half.

The move paid off. Whichelow broke Iain Turner's clean sheet in minute 69, left-footing a shot in from 18 yards out (asst. Stephen McGinn) and Thompson netted his debut goal eleven minutes later from 6 yards away (asst. Martin Taylor).

The point leaves Watford mid-table (and PNE in the cellar). Next match is Saturday, September 19 at Reading, who currently lie a point south of the Hornets. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Watford 1-3 Burnley 12-7-10 43 pts.

This bizarre Dale Bennett own goal in the eighth minute set the tone for the match. Despite Danny Graham equalizing five minutes later (asst. Marvin Sordell cross) and several one-on-one opportunities for Watford, the Clarets were able to capitalize on their chances while the Hornets failed to convert theirs.

The match stayed tied to the hour mark, but Chris Eagles scored the go-ahead off a pass from Chris Iwelumo in minute 66. Eagles returned the favor, setting up an Iwelumo goal in minute 75 to nail down the 3 points for Burnley, pushing them ahead of Watford in the standings. The Hornets are resting mid-table, nine points off the playoffs.

Their next chance comes Tuesday, February 15 in the rescheduled Preston North End match at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Potential Buyers Named

The Watford Observer is reporting that orthopedic surgeon Panos Thomas and Laurence Bassini are behind a possible takeover offer for Watford FC. Which begs the question . . .

In the land of National Health, how does a surgeon earn enough scratch to by a football team? Just askin'.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Watford 12-7-9 43 pts

A Marcus Tudgay goal before I even sat down was the sole goal for the day. Watford threatened to equalize throughout the entire match, but could not pull the trigger. The squad seems to have hit a sloggy patch.

The next match is Saturday, February 12 when Vicarage Road hosts Burnley. Kickoff at 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Watford 1-1 Crystal Palace 12-7-8 43 pts.

I was socked in at home today with the wife & dog as Snowmaggedon sideswiped St. Louis. That made it all the more pleasant to curl up with the Hornets and enjoy the Championship action this afternoon.

It was one of those games; well-played but Watford just couldn't push it over the edge. Watford jumped ahead early on the efforts of two recent loanees. An Andros Townsend cross found Andreas Weimann twelve yards out at the ten minute mark and the recent Aston Villa striker left-footed it in the bottom right corner of the goal to kick off his first-ever start with Watford.

The Hornets held for thirty minutes, playing dominating football, but Townsend gave up the ball midfield and James Vaughn beat Adrian Mariappa on the counter-attack to equalize late in the half.

The dodgy pitch and a clinging fog hampered scoring in the second half and the match ended 1-1 after a full six minutes of added time at the end.

The draw leaves Watford just outside the playoff zone with two games in hand.

The next match is Saturday at Nottingham Forest. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Saturday, January 29, 2011

FAC: Watford 0-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Watford's FA Cup run ended in the fourth round proper today with a home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

It would be easy to pin today's loss on keeper Rene Gilmartin or on Malky Mackay's decision to use his second string keeper, but the fact is Watford was simply outplayed.

Ashley Barnes flat-out beat Gilmartin in minute 16 to score the match's only goal, but the Seagulls trumped Watford on possession, goal attempts, corners, and overall class of play.

We'll see if two consecutive losses provides a wake up call as the Hornets host Crystal Palace Tuesday, February 1. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Monday, January 24, 2011

Ah . . . the run has come to an end and there I was sitting in Toastmaster training (what a scam - I'd been to this class twice before. At least I got a danish out of it - well, two) probably annoying the instructor (a Brit! - missing his own match) by checking on Watford's come-from-behind rally on my Blackberry every 30 seconds.

Down 3-0 after 31 minutes, the Hornets fought back to within striking distance (no pun intended) when Gabor Gyepes broke the spell and sent Watford home without a point.

No worries. This is a squad that had Craig Bellamy, Michael Chopra, & Jay Bothroyd after all and used the win to catapult themselves into second place in the league table.

Watford will have plenty of opportunity to get back to their winning ways Saturday when they host League One side Brighton & Hove Albion in Round 4 Proper of the FA Cup. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

AC St. Louis RIP (2010 - 2011)

AC St. Louis is kaput, following in the footsteps of the Athletica. Not an entirely surprising result. Interestingly, after receiving the Soccer Park from A-B as part of the pitch to bring pro soccer to St. Louis, Cooper's organization is retaining ownership of the property.

Watford Grabs Young Aston Villa Striker On Loan

Watford signed the 19-year old striker Andreas Weimann to a loan deal for the rest of the season. Weiman, an Austrian, has been capped in his country's U17, U19, & U21 squads.

Watford 3-0 Derby Co. 12-6-7 42 pts.

Watford made it seven wins in a row for the first time in over a decade and extended their unbeaten streak to nine in a right manhandling of the Rams.

Lack of defensive polish, especially mis-communication between youngster Dale Bennett & Scott Loach, made the first 35 minutes anybody's match, but a Don Cowie cross found its way to Will Buckley 12 yards out and the Watford forward found the back of the net.

It was Buckley with the assist in the 44th minute as Danny Graham picked up Buckley's cross to right-foot it in from 6 yards out.

A deflated Derby defense got crossed up and let Marvin Sordell score from 18 yards out in injury time to close the first half.

The rest was a formality with Loach needing to make no saves in the second half and the Hornets coasting in with the three points.

The win puts Watford four points off automatic promotion with two games in hand over Swansea. The next match is Saturday, January 22 at Cardiff City. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

FA Cup: Watford 4-1 Hartlepool United

Watford leapt into third round FA Cup action with five fresh faces in the wake of injuries and the return of loanees Jordon Mutch & Andrew Taylor.

Rene Gilmartin gave Scott Loach a rest, Piero Mingoria made his first team debut in place of the injured Don Cowie, Matthew Whichelow & Dale Bennett stepped in for Mutch & Taylor respectively, and Danny Graham got a rest for the the first half at least with Troy Deeney in as a starting striker.

The first half was about thirty minutes of slogging football followed by an increasing tilt in favor of Hartlepool, culminating in an Antony Sweeney goal for Hartlepool in the closing seconds of the first half.

The second half creaked along in the same vein until the one hour mark then it was all Hornets.

Only a spectacular save by Gilmartin kept Hartlepoole from going two up, but minutes later Mingoia scored his first career goal from 25 yards out in the 66th minute, evening up the score for Watford. Two minutes later, Marvin Sordell put the Hornets ahead with a right-footer from 20 yards out (asst. Whichelow).

"Score-dell" picked up his second goal, this time assisted by Dale Bennett in minute 83 and Danny Graham, off the bench, made it 4-1 in added time.

The club donated its share of the profits from the game to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity, a Football League charity partner.

Draw for Round Four will be tomorrow. The next match will be Saturday, January 15 at Vicarage Road when Watford hosts Derby Co. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Scunthorpe United 1-2 Watford 11-6-7 39 pts.

An ugly match, marred by snow, ice, and four floodlight outages, but a beautiful result as Watford nabbed their 15th, 16th, & 17th points in their last 7 matches to remain in the playoff zone.

A truly lackluster affair that saw Watford lucky to be nil-nil at the half turned downright hideous as the first of four power outages hit Glanford Park early in the second half. The Hornets turned cold and allowed a penalty shot in the 57th minute (luckily missed) followed by a Martyn Woolford goal putting Scunny ahead 1-0 four minutes later.

But Danny Graham came to the rescue with an equalizer minutes later, heading in a shot from 12 yards out. The effort took its toll on Graham as he limped off two minutes later, replaced by the seldom seen Matthew Whichelow.

Perhaps we should see more of him as he scored his second goal of the season in six appearances (asst Will Buckley) with four minutes left in regulation to net the Hornets their three points.

The next match is Saturday, January 8 as Vicarage Road plays host to FA Cup action, welcoming League One side Hartlepool United. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

I apologize for not chronicling the last two matches as I had to be elsewhere to attend to family business.
