Queen's Park Rangers (2-4) 13-5-7 44 pts.

Despite a full cadre of substitutions in the second half in the persons of King, Shittu, and O'Toole, the deficit proved too great even with Darius Henderson assisted goals from Damien Francis and Danny Shittu in the 51st and 84th minutes respectively.

Tommy Smith picked up a yellow card in the second half as the Hornets fell hard to a weak opponent.

On the other hand, West Brom widened its lead with a 5-0 win over Scunthorpe. The Hornets travel to Southampton New Year's Day to kick off a very busy January with a battle agaist the Saints who Watford defeated at Vicarage Road 3-2 in September. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

0-3 at the Half

Another drubbing at Vicarage Road! (at least so far). QPR has played a very dominant match thus far - doubling Watford's time of possession and tripling the number of fouls.

QPR's first two goals came on set pieces - a minute 13 Martin Rowlands penalty kick off a Jordan Stewart foul and Rowlands corner kick headed in by Damion Stewart in minute 29.

The final goal of the half came from Rowlands as well, drilled from 12 yards out in the 40th minute.

To add insult to injury, West Brom is leading Scunthorpe 2-0 and Lloyd Doyley picked up a yellow card.

Game Day: Queen's Park Rangers

The Hornets need a win today and some help from mid-table Scunthorpe to scramble back into first. Henderson and Ellington are up front and Lee remains in the net. Though not on the injured roster, Poom is not in the lineup today. In their first fixture of the season, the squads played to a draw at Loftus Road. Full lineup:

Doyley DeMerit Jackson Stewart

Smith Williamson Francis McAnuff

Cardiff City (2-2) 13-5-6 44 pts.

The Hornets slipped into second place again as they failed to win at home yet again in today's Boxing Day match versus Cardiff City -- but it could have been worse. Jobi McAnuff salvaged a point with a last minute (second?) effort in injury time to drill home the equalizer (unassisted) from 18 yards out.

Cardiff drew first blood with a Roger Johnson header (asst. Ledley) in the 34th minute and carried the 1-0 score into the half. Newly minted captain Jay DeMerit tied the match up (asst. Tommy Smith) four minutes into the second half to see the lead recaptured by Cardiff seven minutes later on a Peter Whittington goal (asst. McPhail). Jobi's last ditch effort, on the heels of his game-winner against Sheffield Wednesday, keeps Watford even with West Brom on points, in second due to a goal differential of 22 to 9.

The next match is Saturday, December 29 at Vicarage Road against relegation-bound QPR. Kickoff is at 9:00 an St. Louis time as Watford looks to snap their winless streak at home.

Saturday, December 22, 2007

Sheffield Wednesday (1-0) 13-4-6 43 pts.

The Hornets got a vital away win today to remount the top of the standings. Jobi McAnuff landed a goal (unassisted) in the sixth minute to put Watford ahead and there it stayed earning Watford three crucial points.

The top scorer in the Watford cause today however was probalby Stoke City's Ricardo Fuller who's hat trick dropped West Brom back into the number two slot as they lost 3-1. Joining them with 41 points is Bristol City who defeated Barnsley today 3-2.

Poom and Ainsworth both suited up today but did not see action. It was good to see them available after recently being sidelined with injuries.

I'll be driving back from Iowa and will miss the next match, a Boxing Day affair (that's the 26th for us Yanks) at Vicarage Road against Cardiff City. Kickoff is 6:00 am (yikes!) St. Louis time.

Sunday, December 16, 2007

Plymouth Argyle (0-1) 12-4-6 40 pts.

It took me a day to get over my funk enough to write this one up. In a match reminiscent of last season's Premier League losses, the Hornets gave up a goal and first place in the last minutes of the match. The loss, Watford's third straight at home, gave West Brom the catbird seat after they downed Charlton 4-2. Almost a bad, Bristol City, with a 1-0 defeat of Cardiff, is a mere two points from knocking us out of second and placing us in playoff territory (note to US readers, places 1 & 2 are automatically promoted to the Premier League while spots 3-6 battle for the remaining promotion via playoff).

Lee started in the net as Poom is still shaking off the groin injury acquired in the Colchester match. Tamas Priskin started up front while Darius Henderson served his one game suspension for acquiring five yellow cards. Finally Lionel Ainsworth, on loan from Hereford, got his first start with the club. Alas, it short-lived as he was injured and replaced by Francis at the start of the second half.

The next match is Saturday, December 22 at Sheffield Wednesday. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Mahon Out - DeMerit In

The club announced Saturday that Gavin Mahon would not see his contract renewed at the end of the season. Mahon had been set down in the last few matches, but I was still surprised to see the end of the 30-year old midfielder's Watford career, especially given the uncertainty surrounding midfield with Al Bangura facing deportation. It will be interesting to see if midfield can be beefed up with the January transfer window.

The new captain is none other than the pride and joy of Green Bay, Jay DeMerit who faced his first challenge with a heartbreaking loss to Plymouth Argyle.

Fans Show Support for Bangura

Watford fans showed their support for midfielder Al Bangura Saturday at the half as they participated in a protest against Al's deportation proceedings. In addition to the fans, Al's drawing support to remain in the U.K. from the player's union, Watford's MP Claire Ward, former Home Secretary David Blunkett, and Elton John.

Bangura's status is up in the air as he rides out a 28-day waiting period. Put in your two cents worth by signing the petition to keep Al in the UK.

Stoke City (Nil-Nil) 12-4-5 40 Pts.

Man it's tough getting up at 7:00 on a Sunday for a nil-nil match!

Or so I've heard.

I slept through most of the match, waking up and logging on just in time to see the Hornets draw even on yellow cards when tensions left Lee Williamson and Lloyd Doyley with bookings in the last ten minutes.

As Watford nears the halfway mark of the season, they still top the Championship Division, two points to the good of West Brom - who picked up a pair of points by downing Leicester 2-1 - and three up on Charlton - 3-1 winners at home over Ipswich.

The next match is Saturday, December 15 at Vicarage Road against the Greens of Plymouth Argyle. The Hornets last saw Plymouth in the quarter-finals of last season's FA Cup where Hameur Bouazza's strike send them home. Kickoff is the more reasonable 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Colchester United (3-2) 12-3-5 39 pts.

Scrappy play from the Hornets! After equalizing a two goal deficit in the first half, Tamas Priskin's header off a cross from Tommy Smith in minute 64 earned Watford three points in the standings.

Watford continued to fight to hold the lead, picking up four yellow cards (Doyley, O'Toole, McAnuff, and Henderson) in the second half. Damien Francis & Darius Henderson relieved McAnuff and Priskin respectively in the second half (both tactical).

The next match is early Sunday, December 9 at Stoke-on-Trent as the Hornets take on the Potters (no relation to Harry). Kickoff is at the God-Awful hour of 7:15 am St. Louis time.

2-2 at the Half

Amazingly we are tied at the half thanks to back-to-back goals by Marlon King and John-Joe O'Toole (assist Tommy Smith). Clive Platt gave Colchester an early lead with a right-footer in minute 6. Matthew Connolly made it 0-2 in the 27th minute off a corner kick (and assist) by Johnnie Jackson.

Watford fought back with goals in the 4oth & 42nd minutes to take it tied into the half.

Poom left the pitch with an injury (unspecified) and was replace by Richard Lee in minute 35.

Game Day - Colchester

The Hornets travel to Colchester without Nathan Ellington or captain Gavin Mahon. No word why but neither have been reported injured. O'Toole and Priskin take their place and Poom stays in the net. Full lineup:

Poom

Doyley Shittu DeMerit Stewart

Smith O'Toole Williamson McAnuff

Priskin King

Third Round Proper FA Cup Ties Drawn Yesterday

Watford will play host to their fellow Championship League-mates Crystal Palace in the Third Roud Proper of the FA cup. Championship League teams enter in this round, so this is the first FA match of the 07-08 season for Watford. The tie (match) will be held the first weekend in January.

Bristol City (1-2) 11-3-5 36 pts

The Killer B's!!

Bristol City handed Watford its third straight defeat Saturday, the second with Mart Poom in the net, hot on the heels of Burnley and Barnsley. The loss leaves The Hornets one point to the good of West Brom and three ahead of Wolverhampton.

It was a heartbreaker reminiscent of last season as Watford capitulated in added time.

It was a defensive battle until the 75th minute when The Robins' Enoch Showunmi headed a goal (asst. McIndoe) from 6 yards out. John-Joe O'Toole came on for Gavon Mahon in the 85th minute and tied the score with his own header (asst. Smith) two minutes later. Bristol City pulled the same trick in injury time, bringing Darren Byfield in for Showunmi to score the winner a couple of minutes later from 12 yards out.

McAnuff & Henderson picked up yellow cards in the effort.

The Hornets try to stop the skid in Colchester tomorrow, Tuesday December 4. I'd like to see Lee back in the net, but we'll see what Aidy has in store soon enough. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Burnley (1-2) 11-3-4 36 pts.

The Hornets were hit with their second home loss of the season and their second loss in a row as the Clarets of Burnley managed two second half goals against a returning Mart Poom. Danny Shittu helped Watford avoid the shutout as he drilled a right-footer, unassisted, from 18 yards out.

Watford lead the match in corners and shots, but the ones that counted went Burnley's way.

Jay DeMerit joined Poom as a returnee from the injury list.

The Hornets are still five points ahead of West Brom (who drew against Wolverhampton Sunday) and Charleton (shutout by Sheffield United today) though WBA has one game in hand. They travel to Plymouth tomorrow.

Watford's next match is Saturday, December 2 hosting Bristol City. The BBC says kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time, the Watford site says 11:20. I tend to believe the club site.

Al Bangura Faces Deportation

Injured Watford midfielder Al Bangura faced a deportation hearing in the UK today and will hear the results after a 28-day waiting period. If you want to add your voice to the issue, here's a petition set up by GloryHorns UK. I've signed and I urge you to join it as well:

Barnsley (2-3) 11-3-3 36 pts.

Barnsley handed the Hornets their third loss of the season as Richard Lee was tagged with an own-goal in minute 65 of the match. Our strikers were both shown yellow cards in the last ten minutes as they scrambled to equalize. Damien Francis made his return to the pitch in minute 70, subbing for Gavin Mahon.

Watford stays atop the league table despite the loss and their attention now turns back to Vicarage Road where they host Burnley Tuesday, November 27. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

2-2 at the Half

Two headers by Danny Shittu have kept Watford in the match.

A flurry of goal-scoring activity started in the 31st minute when Jordan Stewart fouled Brian Howard, the free kick eventually leading to a goal by Howard from 12 yards out. Barnsley nailed their second goal three minutes later when Martin Devaney (asst. Campbell-Ryce) right-footed a shot from 12 yards out.

Shittu scored his first two minutes later off Williamson's free kick - thanks to a yellow card on Campbell-Ryce for a foul on Kabba.

Danny's second 6-yard header (Tommy Smith asst.) came in injury time to make it even at the half.

Game Day: Barnsley

The Hornets head to Oakwell Stadium to meet the Tykes of Barnsley. Steve Kabba is back in the starting line-up and Damien Francis, recovered from injury, is available from the bench. Jay DeMerit is still out with injuries and Mariappa is in the defensive line. Lee is in at goal and is the only keeper travelling to Barnsley today. Full line-up:

Doyley Mariappa Shittu Stewart
Smith Mahon Williamson Kabba
King Henderson

Book Review: How Soccer Explains the World

How Soccer Explains the World: An (Unlikely) Theory of Globalization - Franklin Foer (c) 2004 Harper Collins

Mr. Mojo loaned me this book (and I recommended Fever Pitch to him), a terrific sampler for the neophyte and the local soccer fan as well of the sociology behind the the most popular sport in the world.

Though a more apt title would be: How Soccer Reflects the World, the author does a stellar job of exposing the forces under the surface of the game and illustrates how they are changing. Through specific examples as far-ranging as the ethnic conflicts in Yugoslavia to insecure bullying talk show hosts (Jim Rome), Foer explores the impact soccer has had in spurring globalization and the result the feedback has had on the sport.

One example: In the final chapter, "How Soccer Explains the American Culture Wars", the author points to America's failure to export its "National Pastime", baseball, abroad coupled with the tendency of soccer to be embraced by the upper-middle class in the US (as opposed to, say, the UK, where it is still a working-class fan base or here in the US where the working-class embraces basketball and football of the pigskin variety) as the roots of soccer's failure to join the ranks of baseball, football, and basketball as a major US professional sport (you'll note the title is not: How Football Explains the World - apparently it's us Americans that are in need of explanation).

Despite no mention of Watford, I can recommend the book for any thinking or curious fan of the sport.

Colchester United (2-2) 11-3-2 36 pts.

Kevin Lisbie gave Colchester the lead right out of the chute (do you suppose the UK readers have enough rodeo background to get 'right out of the chute'?) in the second half as he drilled a shot past Richard Lee in minute 46.

Marlon King blew a chance to equalize in the 61st minute as Gerken saved a penalty kick by the Watford striker, but he redeemed himself with an overhead kick from 6 yards out to salvage a point for Watford.

Ellington came in for Stewart in the last few minutes to give Watford a little more offensive push, but the match ended with the draw.

I can't help but think that last season a quick score like Lisbie's would have cowed Watford and the score would have ended up 1-3 instead of 2-2. Yes, we are in a lower division but we are playing better football too.

Watford remains eight points in the lead over Charleton who, if their current 3-0 lead holds up, will sneak past idle WBA and Bristol City who fell 0-6 to Ipswich.

European qualifiers are next weekend so the next match for Watford is Saturday, November 24th at Barnsley. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

1-1 at the Half

Watford struck early as Adam Johnson (unassisted) left-footed a shot to the upper center of the goal just four minutes into the match. Colchester equalized in minute 20 as Clive Platt rebounded his own shot to even things out. The Hornets lead on off-target shots but the match is otherwise even.

Game Day: Colchester United

The U's of Colchester United travel west to try their luck at Vicarage Road today. The U's reside 17th on the league table going into today's action with a record of 3-7-5 for 16 points. Both squads are without their number 1 keepers. Boothroyd is leaving the Hornet's line-up unchanged from Tuesday's win over Norwich City.

Go 'Orns!!

Tuesday, November 06, 2007

Norwich City (3-1) 11-2-2 35 pts.

One goal each in the second half and Watford stretches its lead to eight points over Bristol City - who suffered their first home loss of the season to Charleton today - and West Brom, who gained a point with a draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Gavin Mahon, recipient of his third yellow card in the first half, drilled a right-footer from six yards out (asst. Williamson) in minute 88, answering Lee Croft's earlier goal.

The Hornets are back at Vicarage Road Saturday, Nov. 10 as Colchester United come to town. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

2-0 at the Half

Watford has dominated on time of possession, shots, and corners and heads to the locker room up 2-0 on a left-footed goal from 6 yards out by Henderson (asst. Doyley) in the 36th minute and an Adam Johnson corner kick headed by Adrian Mariappa into David Marshall for an own-goal five minutes later. Despite the home field advantage, Norwich will need to show a lot more this half to have any chance at points.

Game Day - Norwich City

The Hornets travel to Carrow Road after their 0-3 spanking by WBA on Saturday to take on the Canaries of Norwich. Lee continues to defend the net for Watford as Poom continues to battle his back problems and Mariappa makes a start as defender Jay DeMerit is still out with a calf injury. Lee Williamson returns after his suspension and rest to take over at midfield for John-Joe O'Toole. King & Hendo start again up front. Full line-up:

Lee
Doyley Shittu Mariappa Stewart
Smith Mahon Williamson Johnson
King Henderson
Go 'Orns!!

Saturday, November 03, 2007

West Bromwich Albion (0-3) 10-2-2 32 Pts.

I missed this match this morning though I doubt it would have brightened my day any. Two successive goals in the first half and a third in the second left the Hornets and keeper Lee shaking their heads. Even Aidy admits they were just outplayed.

More bad news though: Jay DeMerit was stretchered off in the 10th minute with a calf injury of yet unassessed seriousness.

Hopefully the lads will keep their heads about them - they still retain a five point lead in the standings - and return to form next Tuesday when they'll travel to Norwich City. Kickoff, with the end of DST in the states, should be 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

Monday, October 29, 2007

Crystal Palace (2-0) 10-2-1 32 Pts.

Another win!!

Marlon King scored his seventh goal of the season in the 67th minute to put the game out of reach of Crystal Palace. King & Hendo were spelled by Tamas Priskin and Nathan Ellington for the last 15 minutes and Jay DeMerit picked up his second yellow card as Watford 'extended the Watford Gap' to six points over Bristol City who next plays Wolverhampton Saturday.

The Hornets' next match is Saturday as well, a home game against West Bromwich Albion. Kickoff (if I have my time zones and Daylight Savings correct - never a sure bet) is 10:00 am.

1-0 at the half

Tommy Smith right-footed a shot (unassisted) from 12 yards out in the 32nd minute to give Watford a 1-0 lead after a Hornets-dominated half.

Game Day - Crystal Palace

Foiled by Daylight Savings time again! Looks like the UK went off while we stayed on. Kickoff is at 3:00 - Lee starts at goal (Poom is unavailable) King and Henderson up front. Go 'Orns!

Extend the Watford Gap

Hats off to Harper!! The goofy song that got me rooting for the Hornets in the first place.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Coventry City (3-0) 9-2-1 29 Pts.

Darius Henderson put it all but out of reach in minute 46 with a left-footer to the bottom right from 12 yards out with another assist by King. A battered Coventry could not answer with a goal of their own and Watford garnered the three points - roaring to a nine point lead over idle Bristol City.

The next match is Monday, October 29th at Crystal Palace where our old rival "Colin" (Neil Warnock) was named coach two weeks ago. Kickoff is 2:00 pm St. Louis time.

2-0 at the Half

It seems like a wild and woolly match (as much wooliness as can be conveyed by the BBC in a live text feed) with time of possession swinging back and forth, but Watford goes into the half ahead on corners, shots on, and of course goals.

The first came from Adam Johnson (asst. King) who left-footed at 12 yd. shot into the bottom right of Coventry's net at minute 30. King managed his own without an assist from 12 yards out in the 42nd minute.

Jay Demerit and Jordan Stewart managed to get booked within a little over a minute of each other. David McNamee picked up a yellow for Coventry.

Game Day - Coventry City

The 'Orns travel to the West Midlands to take on Coventry City, home of the Sky Blues and Lady Godiva. Coventry finds itself smack in the middle of the league table with 15 points. Lee Williamson is setting out his second game of a three-game suspension (red card versus Scunthorpe) but the starters read:

Lee
Doyley Shittu DeMerit Stewart

Johnson Mahon O'Toole Smith

King Henderson
GO 'ORNS!

Monday, October 22, 2007

Hull City (1-0) 8-2-1 26 points

I was on the road and missed Saturday's match, but, as Aidy put it, it ". . . wasn't a classic." Still three points are three points and after 11 games, the Hornets are six points up on Bristol City.

Though the Tigers controlled most of the game, Marlon King's right-footer from 12 yards out in the 20th minute proved to be all the scoring Watford needed. King & Henderson were the starting strikers with Ellington coming on for Hendo in the 73rd minute. Richard Lee started in the net.

The next match is an away game at Coventry City tomorrow, October 23rd. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time. Go 'Orns!!

US 1-0 Over Switzerland

I took a late (and long) lunch with Swiss-born Mr. Mojo yesterday at Barristers to watch a Donovan-less US team snag their first win on European soil in six matches.

The coach's boy, Michael Bradley, scored the winning goal in the 86th minute - the assist being credited to Clint Dempsey though it was Edu ans Szetela that got the ball rolling (so to speak).

Once again, Jay DeMerit found himself the only player unused for the USA squad. What does Coach Bradley know that Boothroyd does not?

Next USA match is November 17 in Johannesburg.

Saturday, October 06, 2007

Scunthorpe (3-1) 7-2-1 23 Pts.

Hendo, King, and Adam Johnson all scored in a game I managed to miss. Williamson ended up with the red card and was sent off in the 75th minute. Hendo, O'Toole, and Smith all managed yellows. Click on the above for the BBC wrap-up.

No matches for a couple of weeks as international play takes the spotlight. Next match sees Hull City visit Vicarage Road Saturday, October 20. Kickoff is at 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Tuesday, October 02, 2007

Sheffield Wednesday (2-1) 6-2-1 20 pts.

No fresh legs until John O'Toole got some exposure in injury time, spelling King for about 90 seconds, but the 'Orns held the lead and picked up another three points.

Wednesday seemed to fall apart a bit, earning two more yellow cards and playing short when Jermaine Johnson earned a red card for violent conduct in a foul on Jordan Stewart.

Watford keeps their two-point lead as Charleton picked up a win as well today over Hull City. West Brom can close the gap to one tomorrow with a win over Stoke City.

The next match for the Hornets is Saturday, October 6th at Scunthorpe. Kickoff is 9:00 St. Louis time.

2-1 at the Half

Wednesday, dominated in the first 20 minutes, fought back to within one goal at halftime. Watford jumped to the lead with Darius Henderson's 6-yard shot (asst. Shittu) in minute 6. Ten minutes later, he drew a foul from Peter Gilbert that lead to a penalty goal from Marlon King. The Gilbert-Henderson tussle continued with Gilbert drawing a yellow card in minute 42.

Graham Kavanagh's goal kept Sheffield Wednesday within striking distance as they in turn dominated possession in the last twenty minutes of the half. I would expect rested legs to come into the midfield in the second half.

Game Day - Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday, currently camped near the bottom of the League table, visit Watford for a weeknight match. The same XI are starting for Watford that started Saturday's draw against Blackpool. Starting for Sheffield is St. Louis' own Frankie Simek.

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Blackpool: (1-1) 5-2-1 17pts.

A foul by Danny Shittu on Gary Taylor-Fletcher lead to the equalizing penalty kick by Wesley Hoolahan in minute 72 - erasing Adam Johnson's first half goal.

Johnson scored in minute 41 after taking a free kick granted as the result of a penalty on Darius Henderson by Kaspars Gorkss. Johnson had earned a booking earlier in the half.

The score stayed 1-0 at the half and Aidy brought in fresh legs for Johnson (Jobi McAnuff) and Hendo (Ellington) 11 minutes into the second half. Hoolahan's goal capped the scoring in a macth with few shots on goal for either squad (4 saves each for Poom & Rachubka).

The draw keeps Watford atop the league as Charleton played to a draw and West Brom was idle.

The next match is Tuesday against Sheffield Wednesday (Popeye's friend Wimpy must have thought that up) at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 1:45 St. Louis time.

Game Day: Blackpool

Despite all the injury rumors, the Hornets will be starting King, Henderson AND DeMerit against mid-table rival Blackpool at Vicarage Road today. Maybe a little psych job by Boothroyd? Full line-up:

Poom
Shittu DeMerit Stewart Doyley
Johnson Mahon Williamson Smith

Injury (kinda) Update

The 'Orns may be lacking a few starters Saturday as King & Henderson have been slowed by the flu and DeMerit is suffering from knee problems.

Saturday, September 22, 2007

Queen's Park Rangers (1-1) 5-1-1 16 pts.

The Hornets still sit astride the Championship League with today's draw vs. QPR. In all honesty, I did not get to follow the match so click on the link above to get the Beeb's take.

Next match is Saturday, September 29 as the Tangerines make the trip to Vicarage Road. Kickoff is 9:00 St. Louis time.

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Cardiff City (2-1) 5-0-1 15 points

Hendo for president!!

Having scored the last four Watford goals, two of which were game winners, it is clear the new contract has sat well with Darius Henderson.

The win puts Watford a full 3 points ahead of Bristol City.

Hendo's first goal, at 17 minutes (asst. DeMerit), gave the Hornets a lead lead they battled to maintain for nearly an hour as Poom staved off 11 shots by my count. Eventualy though, the equalizer found the net off the foot of Hasselbaink. Gavin Mahon's assist found Hendo in minute 78 to score the go-ahead.

Once again, I screwed up the start time for the St. Louis fans and I apologize. 13:00 is not 3:00. Aarrgh!! Next match is at QPR Saturday. Kickoff is at 9:00 am St. Louis time (I promise).

One Month Moves

Keeper Scott Loach and striker Will Hoskins will go on loan to Stafford and Millwall respectively. Hoskins has seen little time since being picked up from Rotherham and with Ellington on the club, is likely to see even less. Loach simply needs a little more playing time. Both loans are for one month.

Sunday, September 16, 2007

Southampton (3-2) 4-0-1 12 pts.

Both squads trotted out some fresh legs as the second half progressed with Johnson coming in for McAnuff and Henderson spelling Ellington. This proved crucial as Hendo picked up the equalizing and winning goals after Southampton took the lead on Dyer's 20-yard goal at minute 69.

Henderson caught the pass off Lloyd Doyley and left-footed a shot into the net from 6-yards out to tie the match. It looked like a draw until the 90th minute when a foul on Marlon King set up a free kick from Adam Johnson that found its way to Hendo who socked away the winner.

Williamson, Smith & Henderson all picked up yellow cards. Poom nabbed two saves and Southampton keeper, Kelvin Davis beat back eight, but was still overwhelmed by Watford's attack.

The Hornets take their winning ways to Cardiff City Wednesday. Kickoff is 3:45 St. Louis time.

Southampton 1-1 at the Half

A win today will put the Hornets in sole possession of first. So far they've played aggressively, going into the half ahead on possession, shots on goal and corners. A cross from Tommy Smith setting up a 6-yard header by Danny Shittu gave Watford the lead in the 42nd minute. Unfortunately Southampton countered three minutes later as Rasiak scored from right up the middle 18 yards out.

Ellington and King are up front and, good news, Poom was able to start in the net. The full lineup:

Poom
Doyley DeMerit Shittu Stewart

McAnuff Mahon Williamson Smith

Busy Friday

Two signings were announced today: Jay DeMerit's contract was extended for another year (through 2010). According to Aidy he's a "future captain of club and country."

Also snagged was M'Boro midfielder Adam Johnson. We'll have the under-21 international player on loan for three months.

The Hornets are back at Vicarage Road Sunday against mid-table Southampton. Poom is questionable to start. Kickoff is 7:15 am St. Louis time.

Brazil Downs US 4-2

In a match closer than the score would indicate, 43,000 + fans at Soldier Field were treated to a hard-fought game from both sides. Every coach in the game should have a tape of this match to hammer home the importance of practice, practice, and more practice of set plays as all but two goals came from a standing start.

Showing practice does make perfect, USA drew first blood in the 21st minute as an in-swinging Landon Donovan corner kick (worked extensively in practice Saturday) found an open Carlos Bocanegra who 'sumo'ed the ball into the net.

Eight minutes later, Brazil demonstrated why they are so dangerous. These guys are so quick it seems like they have 15 men on the pitch at any given moment, swarming both ends of the field. On their scoring attack, nine (!) players touched the ball. A beautiful one-touch pass by Ronaldinho set up the shot on goal by Kaka. Tim Howard managed the save, but Oguchi Onyewu's momentum carried him into the ball and he scored an own goal, tieing the score at 1-1.

The half ended with Robinho writhing in pain after a display of fancy dribbling down the end line only to have referee Armondo Archundia patiently wait for him to get up and hobble off the field before showing him the yellow card for diving. All in all the midfielders did a very good job with Robinho's step-overs and other tricks, managing a few steals.

Another corner gave Brazil the lead in the second half, this time from Ronaldinho to Lucio who headed it into the net. Play was stopped for a few minutes as Howard dislocated a finger but he played on the remainder of the match.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey managed the equalizer (asst. Cherundolo) in minute 73, but Ronaldinho put home the winner on a free kick awarded on a suspect foul two minute later. A penalty kick by Elano in stoppage time made the final 4-2. Super Jay rooted from the bench. Team USA's next match is with Catalonia in Barcelona October 14.

Poom Injured

According to the official Watford site, keeper Mart Poom missed his start for the Estonian national team with a back injury and has returned to Watford for treatment.

Poom was signed over the summer to replace Ben Foster who was 'unloaned' and reclaimed by Manchester United. This could spell trouble for Watford or it could be a great opportunity for Richard Lee (cue "Call Mr. Lee" by Television) who did yeoman's work for the club when Foster was injured or cup-tied last season.

"Clash of Champions" Tomorrow

Copa d'Oro (read: North America) winners Team USA host CONMEBOL (South America) champs Brazil in what is being billed as the "Clash of Champions" tomorrow at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Brazil is bringing the big guns including Barcelona's Ronaldhino and Copa America goal leader Robinho (currently on the Real Madrid squad). In addition to Landon Donovan, two players of interest to readers of this blog, both defenders, will be suiting up for the US squad: Watford Hornet Jay DeMerit and, from Watford's Championship League rivals (and I use the term loosely as they currently occupy last place) Sheffield Wednesday, SLU High School alumni Frankie Simek.

The game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN 2 and, for those of you who like your football in Spanish, Univision. Kickoff is at 3:00 pm Central and if you are up for a road trip, sideline, endline, and corner seats are still available.

Ipswich Town: (2-0) 3-0-1 9 pts.

I missed this one as was on the road all weekend. Poom started in the net and newcomer Nathan Ellington started on the bench as Darius Henderson and Marlon King took the field at striker. The combination paid off in the 6th minute as Hendo scored on an assist by King to take the lead. That held up as Poom shut out the Tractor Boys and Tommy Smith got the insurance goal in minute 75.

Hendo was rewarded with a signing on Monday, putting to rest rumors of his transfer (and turning them up on Kabba). Ellington saw playing time in the last 20 minutes and Williamson picked up a yellow card as the Hornets collected their 3 points.

The win puts them second place, a point behind Coventry City (who did eventually win the FA Cup all you Monty Python fans).

The League is on hiatus for two weeks as national matches take the stage. Called up to their national teams were Poom, Priskin, Shittu, and Jay DeMerit who will be on the USA squad when they face Brazil this Sunday. Next match for Watford is Sunday, September 16 at Vicarage Road. Kickoff is the ungodly hour 7:15 am St. Louis time.

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Ellington Signed

The rumors were true. West Bromwich Albion striker Nathan Ellington signed a four-year deal with Watford this week for a record-setting (for Watford) £3.25 - £4.25 million contract.

This will add some spark that's been missing up front and should quiet some of the sniping at Hornet's management for their tight-fisted ways; it is likely to spur rumors about Henderson or Kabba's eminent departure however.

Leicester Manager Sacked

From the Glasgow Times:

Leicester have parted company with manager Martin Allen - just hours after he helped save Clive Clarke with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Harsh.

Leicester Defender Clive Clarke Collapses During League Cup Match

Latest is he's still stable.

Two items of note here:

Clarke was one of only seven Foxes not to score on us Saturday - had he been well it may have been 5-1.

Second: Note the teams agreed to STOP THE MATCH. Just another reminder the Brits are a bit more civilized than us. It took an earthquake to stop the World Series.

LC: Southend United 0-2

. . . and cut! That's a wrap for the League Cup this season. 2-nil to piddly Southend. It looked like lack of defense and solid midfield play from what I've read and it really smarts. Cup play was one of the brighter points last season, especially the FA Cup. I hope this means we can concentrate on League play. Rubbing salt in the wounds, L*t*n Town upset Sunderland 3-nil to advance.

Next round commences the week of September 24.

Saturday, August 25, 2007

Leicester City (1-4) 2-0-1 6 pts.

Ugly.

Frustration abounded as the Hornets embarrassed themselves in this 4-1 foul-fest (11 yellow cards between the squads - including Kabba's third in three matches). The saving grace was Marlon King's penalty goal in the waning minutes to avoid the shutout. In addition to Kabba, Mahon, King, Shittu, and Stewart picked up yellows for Watford.

Aidy must correct this NOW. A disintegration like this against a mediocre squad bodes ill far worse than any of the Premier League spankings we took last season. How they bounce back against Ipswitch Town will be crucial.

Meanwhile, League Cup action continues Tuesday as the Hornets travel to Southend United for round two.

Game Day: Leicester City

The Hornets take their unbeaten-undrawn upon record to Walkers Stadium to take on the 0-1-1 Leicester City Foxes. Boothroyd has made little change to the line-up - Steve Kabba for Darius Henderson in at striker being the only change.

Go 'Orns!!

Saturday, August 18, 2007

Sheffield United (1-0) 2-0-0 6 pts.

I'll have to check to see how long it took to get 6 points last season - but it wasn't two games.

Lee Williamson left-footed in the only goal (asst. McAnuff) from 12 yards out to give the Hornets their second straight victory. With Coventry, Crystal Palace, Ipswitch, Plymouth, and Blackpool all drawing and Burnley losing outright, Watford and Stoke City are left to battle for first. Stoke and Charleton are nil-nil at the half.

Kabba picked up a yellow card, his second of the nascent season, for persistent infringement.

Next match is Saturday, August 25 vs. Leicester City away. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

Nil - Nil at the Half

Practically even on possession, only one shot on goal (Sheffield). They also have garnered the majority of corners and penalties. Fouls have been light in front of our net indicating control of the game for Watford. Bodes well for the second half.

League Cup: Round 2 Draws

The Hornets will be travelling to take on Southend United - The Shrimpers (yes, nothing says England like shrimp) - in Round 2 of the League Cup the week of August 27. L*t*n Town will host Sunderland. For the rest of the draws see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_Cup_2007-08#Round_Two

Game Day: Sheffield United

The Hornets dropped two 1-0 matches against Sheffield United in Premier League play last season. They've both been relegated this season and reignite the rivalry at Vicarage Road for Watford's home opener.

Watford is coming off a 1-0 league win over Wolverhampton last Saturday and a 3-0 drubbing of Gillingham in Round 1 of the League Cup Tuesday.

Sheffield United kicked off their Championship season with a 2-2 draw against Colchester and followed up with a 3-1 win over Chesterfield in the LC.

Another chance for Poom to show what he has in the net for Watford, this should be a great match as both teams fight their way back to the Premier league. Line-up for Watford is:

01 Poom
12 Doyley
06 DeMerit
04 Shittu
03 Stewart
11 McAnuff
08 Mahon
14 Williamson
21 Smith
09 King
10 Henderson
Go 'Orns !!!

Carlisle off to Burnley

Defender Clarke Carlisle signed with Burnley Thursday for a reported £200,000 in a three year deal. If someone had to go from our defender-heavy line-up, better Carlisle than DeMerit or Danny Shittu.

In a semi-related story, Aidy slapped a £60 million price tag on Marlon King, key to his promotion plans, stating, "If we get into the Premier League we get £60m, so unless somebody has £60m, Marlon's going nowhere." Hello Chelsea??

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

LC: Gillingham (3-0)

Taking advantage of Gillingham playing a man down after Efe Sodje was sent off, Alex Campana got the third goal of the match in the 71st minute. Richard Lee took his turn in the net today in League Cup Round 1 action.

Next round will be the week of August 27 - I'll post the draw date when I find out.

The home opener is this Saturday vs. fellow relegatees Sheffield United. Kickoff is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

LC: Watford Leads Gillingham 2-0 at the Half

Fresh off an opening day win over Wolverhampton, the Hornets take a 2-0 lead into the half in round 1 of the League Cup over League One's Gillingham. Rinaldi & Priskin have a goal each with Rinaldi chalking up a yellow card as well.

King Late Penalty Sinks Wolves

Yahoo! UK write up on the match.

Wolverhampton (2-1) 1-0-0 3 pts.

Top 'o the World Ma!! Boy it's nice to be on the other end of the standings table not to mention the other side of a last-five-minutes scoring flurry. Jordan Stewart picked up the equalizer in minute 87 and Marlon King picked up the three points for the Hornets on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Watford played aggressively catching 10 corners and picking up a yellow card in the person of Lee Williamson.

Next game is at Vicarage Road Tuesday the 14th as Watford opens their run for the League Cup against Gillingham. Kickoff is 1:45 pm St. Louis time.

0-1 at the Half

Excepting a late (45') first half goal by Olofinjana from 12 yards out it's been a fairly even match thus far - the play seems to be around the Wolves goal. Watford had double the corners, shots on, and shots off until the goal. The Wolves lead on fouls, mostly at midfield and in defense. We'll need to capitalize on the possessions.

Game Day - Wolverhampton Wanderers

First league game of the season - first league start for Poom in at goal. I am excited. Some new faces in the line-up, but it feels like the first day back at school with old friends for me. I'm playing an outdoor gig tonight and I'll be wearing my Watford jersey in honor of opening day.

Earlier this year, I met a cabbie in Madison from Wolverhampton; little did we know we'd be kicking off the season against each other. The BBC is doing its spotty usual on the play-by-play but I'm sure I'll be able to follow.

Starting line-up:

01 Poom
12 Doyley
04 Shittu
06 DeMerit
03 Stewart
14 Williamson
08 Mahon
11 McAnuff
21 Smith
09 King
17 Priskin

New Season, New League

Hard to believe but a new season starts tomorrow as the Hornets open up in Wolverhampton. A few new faces grace the squad, especially goal keeper Mart Poom a pickup from Arsenal to replace reclaimed favorite Ben Foster.

In addition to Foster, Watford takes the pitch without one of my favorites from last year Haneur Bouazza. Hameur was snatched up by Fulham for 4 million pounds.

I'm expecting more wins and less TV time this season, as well as an assault on promotion and a chance to learn about a few more teams. If this squad can play together well right off the bat, we'll be back in the Premiership in no time (well, nine months - but who's counting?). Kickoff is 11:20 St. Louis time.

Goooooo 'Ooooooorns!!

Team USA Update

After their 2-1 victory over Mexico (sans Jay), they ran into a buzz-saw with the Copa America, dropping all three Group matches: Argentina 4-1 (Jay started), Paraguay 3-1 (Jay started), and Columbia 1-0 (Jay rode the pine). A bright note, however, was the Under-20 team's defeat of powerhouse Brazil last week 2-1.

US 2 - Panama 1 in Quarter Finals

Jay DeMerit rode the pine once again as the US advanced to the Gold Cup semi-finals. The US will host Canada at Soldier Field tomorrow (Thurs.) night. Kickoff is 6 pm and the match will be carried on FSC.

Thursday, June 14, 2007

2007-2008 Fixtures Announced

The Hornets start their season off August 11 with a road trip to visit Molineux Stadium and take on the Wolverhampton Wanderers. League Cup ties were also announced today with Watford hosting League One squad Gillingham F.C.. The first Championship League match at Vicarage Road will see the Hornets hosting fellow relegatees Sheffield United. Two months and counting.

USA 4-0 over El Salvador

Team USA picked up a full 9 points in the preliminary round of the Gold Cup competition with a 4-0 drubbing of El Salvador. DeMerit did not play and USA star Landon Donovan was pulled after the first half. Quarter finals are Saturday against Panama. Kickoff is 3:00 pm St. Louis time and the game is being televised on FSC and Univision.

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

CORRECTION: USA-El Salvador

My bad - the kickoff is 6:00 pm Central. I'm planning on catching the match at Hawk's Bar & Grill in Madison (jambalaya is the special today!) at the suggestion of Chris Rumbelow of the Madison United FC.

US vs. El Salvador Today

The USA national team looks for a sweep of the first round tonight as they take on El Salvador fresh off their 1-0 victory of Guatemala and 2-0 shutout of Trinidad & Tobago. Jay DeMerit started the T&T game and saw some playing time in the last 15 minutes of the Guatemala game. Kickoff is 8:00 pm St. Louis time.

Jobi McAnuff

The Hornets nab their 4th off-season pickup with acquisition of Jamaican midfielder Jobi McAnuff. McAnuff has bounced around the FA since 2001 - spending the last two seasons at Crystal Palace. He was also on the Jamaican national team in 2002. The winger spent a good deal of last season injured.

DeMerit Rides the Pine in 4-1 USA Victory

I don't want to make this an 'All Jay/All USA' blog during the off-season, but those of us in states have to take what pride we can in our locals. Unfortunately, that didn't amount to much as Jay was the only sub not used in Saturday's friendly over China.

The good news in there will be three chances in the next week to catch Team USA and Super Jay in the preliminary CONCACAF rounds (all on FSC - all times Central):

June 7 - 8:00 PM vs Guatemala
June 9 - 4:00 PM vs Trinidad AND Tobago
June 12 - 8:00 PM vs El Salvador

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Newcastle United (1-1) 5-13-20 28 pts.

And so it ends. As I posted, I managed to miss this match and have been a bit remiss in keeping up to date. So here goes a dump of everything:

Renovations pick up at Vicarage Road

With no home friendlies scheduled until August, the multi-million dollar renovations on Vicarage Road have begun. No need to wait until August for football however as the first friendly of the season is Wednesday, July 18 at Wealdstone.

Goodbye Ben, Hello Poominator

Estonian goalkeeper Mart Poom, heads to Watford from Arsenal, replacing much-loved Ben Foster who had been on loan from Manchester United the last two seasons.

Hello Jackson, Goodbye (gulp!) Super Jay ?!!

Watford has also signed a two-year deal for 35-year old Matt Jackson. Captain of Wigan Athletic XI and a fixture there for seven years, Jackson will be coming to play which means one of our current defenders is out the door. Of Chambers, Shittu, and DeMerit, we can probably get the most out of Jay in the transfer market. I'll be sad to see the Green Bay native go if it comes to that as he plays with heart enough for an entire squad.

Other Football

In the FA Cup finals May 19, Watford spoilers Manchester United fell to Chelsea 1-0 a.e.t. and in the UEFA Champions league, AC Milan downed Liverpool 2-1 last week.

I had a blast this season, I look forward to learning about new clubs next year in the Championship League and though I'll miss the games on TV, next season will be an exciting one anyway. I'll be in touch over the summer.

Go 'Orns!!!!

Friday, May 11, 2007

Reading (2-0) 5-12-20 27 pts.

I was unable to follow this game and, sad to say, will miss Sunday's game (9 am K.O. St. Louis time) as Watford brings its Premier League run to a close at Vicarage Road against Newcastle.

Boothroyd has signed through 2010 and there is no doubt he expects to spend part of his tenure back in the top league.

I'll be checking in to see how the off-season shapes up. It's been exciting this year and I'll miss watching the games but I have no doubt next year will be just as exciting. Go 'Orns!!

Monday, April 30, 2007

Sheffield United (0-1) 4-12-20 24 pts.

A fairly ugly game Saturday from the Hornets with an own goal by Powell off a Michael Tonge strike in the closing minutes of the first half providing the only score of the match. Watford picked up 4 yellows including Danny Shittu getting booked by mistake for what would have been Clark Carlisle's second (and an invitation to leave the pitch). Mahon picked his up in the first 5 minutes and Henderson bookended the match with a yellow at minute 80.

The last Premiership away for at least a season is this Saturday, May 5 at Reading. Kickoff is 9:00 an St. Louis time.

Boothroyd looks to bounce back as Watford go down - World Soccer - Yahoo! Sports

Boothroyd looks to bounce back as Watford go down - World Soccer - Yahoo! Sports

It's Official

With today's draw against Manchester City, Watford is officially relegated to the Championship League for the 07-08 season.

The only bright spot is we lasted one day longer than L*t*n Town who were relegated to League One after Friday's loss to Derby.

Manchester City (1-1) 4-12-19 24 pts.

Tamas Priskin right-footed a shot into the lower left corner off an assist by Rinaldi in the 75th minute to earn Watford the 1 for the draw. Not just the score, but the entire match was dead even: Time of Possession 49-51, Shots on 1-1, Shots off 3-3, corners (slight lead to Watford here) 5-3. A hard won point as the season winds down.

Next match is Saturday, April 28 at Sheffield United.

Nil - Nil at the Half

A fairly even match overall so far. Watford controlled the pitch for the first part of the half, but Man City's brought the game back to parity at the half. Damien Francis had to leave the pitch in minute 24 with an injury and was replaced by Kabba.

If the Hornets can manage to play a full half, our chances look pretty good.

Game Day - Manchester City

Manchester City comes to town for the penultimate match at Vicarage Road this season. Marlon King makes his first start since recovering from his prolonged injury and defenders Doyley & Powell find their way back into the line-up as well. On City's side, goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson returns from injury list as well for what promises to be a close match - odd-makers have the Hornets as slight underdogs.

This will probably be the day we are officially relegated, but keep your chins up and Go 'Orns!

Starters:

Foster
Doyley
Powell
Carlisle
DeMerit
Francis
Mahon
Bouazza
Bangura
Rinaldi
King

Blackburn Rovers (1-3) 4-11-19 23 pts.

Although King spent the game suited up on the sidelines, it was lack of defense, not offense, that told the tale yesterday. With two goals in the first ten minutes from Samba off a corner kick then Roberts into the lower left corner (both assisted by Bentley), the Rovers took an early lead. Loaner Douglas Rinaldi headed in The Hornet's only goal at minute 21 (asst. Bouazza), but McCarthy got that back with a 32nd minute header (asst. Bentley) and that was the end of the scoring. No statistic was more telling of Watford's defensive troubles than having to fend off 21 shots from the Rovers.

The next match is at Vicarage Road this Saturday as Manchester City comes to Watford for the next-to-last home match of the season. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.

FA Cup: Manchester United (1-4)

Thus ends the run.

On one side: Manchester United with England's captain Wayne Rooney, and international stars Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand. On the other: scrappy, plucky Watford - without the services of their starting goalkeeper.

For a brief moment, I thought we'd see a miracle. With 30 minutes left and down by 1, I thought the heavens would open, Van der Sar would be blinded, and we would go on to win on penalty kicks. No such luck.

Rooney sat the tone with a goal (asst. Carrick) in minute 7, but Bouazza managed the equalizer (asst. Tommy Smith) in the 26th minute. Two minutes later Manchester United had the lead again, this time Rooney earned the assist on a goal by Ronaldo. And there it stood for 30 minutes as the prayers of the Watford fans ascended to heaven.

To fall on deaf ears as it turns out.

Rooney picked up his second goal in minute 66 (asst. Alan Smith) and Richardson plunked in the obligatory end-of-match goal against Watford (asst. Alan Smith) to advance to the finals. They'll take on the winner of tomorrow's match between the Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea.

If this were a handicap match, Watford exceeded all expectations drawing nearly even on possession and, until the end, shots on goal, and kept the match close for an hour. Hell, we gave up 3 less goals than Roma. Jay DeMerit earned a yellow card with Rooney and Carrick picked up one each for United.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the match had to be the return of Marlon King, out with injury for the bulk of the season. Despite the official website and my reporting 3 hours earlier, Marlon suited up and came on for Tamas Priskin late in the second half.

There are five games left in the season, the next is at Ewood Park against the Blackburn Rovers this Wednesday the 18th. Kickoff is 4:00 pm St. Louis time.

Game Day - Manchester United

The Hornets travel to Villa Park today for the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Mr. Mojo & I were having lunch the other day when he asked: How does a cellar-dweller team like Watford end up in the semi-finals? Well it has literally been the luck of the draw but that luck will probably run out today as we face the steamroller which is Manchester United (the bookies agree - Watford is a 9-1 dog).

Coming off a 7(!) - 1 win over Roma, United is on a roll both at home and in the Champions League. Add to the mix that Ben Foster will not be in goal (he's on loan from Man. U.) and King is not yet ready to take the pitch and Watford gives new meaning to the word underdog. On the plus side, Mahon is back in after his dead leg against Portsmouth.

Still, IF they can pull it off, we'll be telling our grandkids (and random passers-by for that matter) the tale for years. So enjoy and . . .

Go 'Orns!!!!

Looks Like I Wasn't the Only Yank Looking for a Football Team after the World Cup

The man's thought process was a little more thorough than mine - but then again he ended up with the wrong choice.

Portsmouth (4-1) 4-11-18 23 pts.

Note to Management:

Effective immediately, all Watford games to be rescheduled for noon on weekdays.

If that's what it takes, so be it. A delightful game as the Hornets, fresh from a disaster against Middlesbrough and its attendant butt-chewing from Boothroyd, rallied from a deficit to score a season-high (Premiership anyhow) 4 goals and pick up 3 points in the standings.

Kabba picked up two assists in the second half with Tamas Priskin's goal at minute 51 and Bouazza's coffin-nail at minute 73. Mvuemba retaliated for Portsmouth in the 81st minute, but Watford hung on, aided by fresh legs in the persons of Chambers and Lloyd Doyley to win the match.

Gavin Mahon took a hit in the second half and left the pitch. Also it turns out Henderson did break his hand in Saturday's match.

Next match is the FA Cup semis against Manchester United at Villa Park Saturday. Kickoff is 11:30 St. Louis time.

2-1 at the Half

Gavin Mahon, back after being pulled at the half against Middlesborough for lackluster performance, dropped in the go-ahead goal as the half wound down. Taylor put Portsmouth on the board in the 16th minute (assist O'Neil), but Hameur Bouazza equalized in the 27th minute off Tamas Priskin's penalty shot - Priskin earning the assist. On to the second half - Go 'Orns!

Game Day - Portsmouth

I can't believe I'm up following this match at 6:30 in the morning!

A couple of notes from the injury front: Clark Carlisle makes his first start this season - welcome back. And contrary to the BBC's initial report, Henderson was pulled for performance - not injury; he is not suited up today.

Starting Line-Up:

Foster
Mariappa
DeMerit
Carlisle
Stewart
Smith
Francis
Mahon
Bouazza
Priskin
Kabba

Saturday, April 07, 2007

Middlesborough (1-4) 3-11-18 20 Pts.

Not our best showing.

Right off the bat (minute 5) Viduka (asst. Downing) dropped in the first goal putting the Hornets down one. Damien Francis scored the equalizer with an assist from Shittu in the 22nd minute, Boateng (asst. Johnson) put M'Boro back on top 3 minutes later. There it stood until the half.

Aidy pulled Mahon for Priskin to juice up the second half, but Viduka scored his second goal of the match in minute 75 (unassisted). He didn't get the hat trick but contributed an assist to Rochemback's goal in the 79th minute.

M'Boro dominated the match, controlling the pitch 2 minutes for every 1 Watford was in charge. The Hornets only managed 3 shots on goal to Boro's 15 and trailed on corner 3-9 as well.

The most worrisome aspect of the match came halfway through the first half when Darius Henderson left the pitch (injured according to the BBC) - replaced by Bouazza. The Watford site makes this sound as if it were a tactical change.

The next match is Monday at 6:45 am St. Louis time as Portsmouth visits Vicarage Road. The game will be on FSC but I doubt Barrister's will be open.

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

Chelsea (0-1) 3-11-17 20 pts.

Oh so close!

I'll admit - I was AWOL on this one. Something came up and I thought - "Well I can go to this event or I can watch the Hornets get thumped on by Chelsea." Sadly, that may have cost me the most exciting game of the season.

Ben Foster's 5 saves held Chelsea in abeyance for the entirety of regulation time, only to have Kalou (asst. Shevchenko) head one in two minutes into injury time. Francis sported two shots on goal (and a yellow card) while Henderson & Kabba managed one apiece.

Jay DeMerit was back in the starting line-up after starting on Wednesday for Team USA.

No more comments as I did not follow the game. Next match is Saturday against Middlesborough. Kick-off is 9:00 am St. Louis time.
