Everton (1-2) 0-0-1 0 Pts.
I gather we played well despite the loss. Do I have this right? The Toffees? This may well be the wussiest nickname in all sports (Titmice anyone?). I'm glad to see early season optimism is universal. I'm looking forward to the Uniteds this week.
The reason that Evertone are called the Toffees is that there was a business near the ground called Mother Noblett's Toffee Shop which advertised and sold sweets, including the Everton Mint, on match days. This also led to the Toffee Lady tradition in which a girl will walk around the perimeter of the pitch before the start of a game tossing free Everton Mints into the crowd. So it doesn't really matter how wussy it sounds, the fact is that it is significant to the history of the team. Aside from that, good to see the spread of the Yellow Army to across the pond.
