Dan T. Joined me Saturday for the last of the Billiken's pre-season friendlies. School was back in session for this match and a large, noisy student crowd showed their school spirit for the first half at least.
SLU (I think state law requires I refer to them as No. 8-ranked SLU) dominated the match (22 shots on to 4) but Memphis held on through the half nil-nil, challenging Disbennett at goal twice. The crowd that left at half missed all the good stuff-- sub Scott Wisniewski picking up a goal in minute 63 (asst. Patterson & Viviano) and an unassisted goal by Jimmy Holmes with less than a second left in play (for those familiar with normal football time keeping, NCAA counts down the time instead of up and stops the clock for some play stoppage).
Ross Kaufman filled the net in the second half though the SLU defense kept him from having to dirty his gloves with a save. SLU travels to LA to start their regular season with at match against San Diego this Friday, August 30, in the Loyola Marymount University Fall Classic. Kickoff is 3:00 pm St. Louis time.
